Category: Parks & Recreation
Telephone: (804) 530-1000
Address: 11700 Hogan’s Alley

Description: This course is well named and well situated in Chesterfield County above the James River, 15 minutes south of downtown. Designed by Steve Smyers, this par 71 championship course ranges from 4,932 to 6,671 yards and has four sets of tees. The first three holes and the last offer beautiful views of the river, and you’ll encounter other water features along the way. You’ll also see plenty of houses as you traverse the course, as River’s Bend is a golf community with large homes lining parts of the course. The terrain is quite up and down with many bluffs. The expansive river view from the 18th tee is well worth the hike up the 60 steps to the tee box. Golf Digest ranks it four stars. The greens fee is $50 in peak season with off-peak discounts available.

65. Virginia Department Of Game And Inland Fisheries

City: Richmond, VA
Category: Parks & Recreation
Telephone: (866) 721-6911

Description: Hunting and trapping license requirements and fees are somewhat involved, with different rules for residents and nonresidents, so to make sure you have the required licenses for the relevant season, get information at www.huntfishva.com. It’s the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries’ Web site and has all the information you’ll need, including prices, hunting seasons, and helpful links. Licenses may be purchased online, by phone during business hours, or at scads of agents in retail stores. Hunting on public lands is not allowed on Sun in Virginia, and remember the blaze orange clothes. For hunting and fishing gear and apparel, Green Top, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Gander Mountain, Bass Pro Shops, and Orvis, all retailers in the region, ought to scratch that itch.

66. Pocahontas State Park

City: Richmond, VA
Category: Parks & Recreation
Telephone: (804) 796-4255
Address: 10301 State Park Rd.

Description: During squirrel, deer, and turkey seasons, a remote section of 8,000-acre Pocahontas State Park that’s closed to other day users opens for public hunting. In addition, every December the entire park closes to all users except 50 hunters a day, chosen by lottery, who are allowed to hunt to thin the deer herd. Five thousand acres of the wooded park are divided into 25 zones with two hunters maximum in each zone, so there’s room to roam just 20 miles from Richmond.

67. Powhatan Wildlife Management Area

City: Richmond, VA
Category: Parks & Recreation

Description: The 4,462-acre public area 3 miles west of Powhatan Courthouse off US 60 once was several farms. Crisscrossed by streams and ponds, woods and fields, it now provides a variety of hunting experiences during several hunting seasons. There’s the possibility of bear, deer, and turkey during the fall big-game season, small game in the migratory game-bird season, and then furbearers in the trapping season. Beavers, woodcocks, and wood ducks like the swampy areas, and quail, rabbits, and squirrels have their favorite habitats, too.
