Description: Extensively remodeled in 2001, this 583-seat chandelier-lit theater now looks essentially as it did when it opened in 1933 as the Williamsburg Theater. Owned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, has a full schedule—lectures, concerts, and art films and documentaries. A very popular recurring performance is Dean Shostak’s Crystal Concerts. Description: The library has done an extraordinary job of becoming, in effect, the community’s cultural arts center. In the art center’s lobby there are small ongoing exhibits by visual artists working in a variety of media. The auditorium, which seats 268, provides venue for lectures, debates, forums, and performances of all kinds, from symphonies, chamber concerts, and choral presentations to high school–band rock ’n’ roll. The Art Center’s emphasis is on providing enriching, educational programming for the community. Events held here are typically free, but occasionally an event organized by an outside group will charge a minimal fee. The library also hosts a number of national acts that require a cover charge ranging from free to $20.

Description: A popular and informal arts offering is the Summer Breeze on the Square, which features performances of America’s original art form on Thursday nights in July. Attendees are invited to bring folding chairs and blankets for these outdoor performances, held on Merchants Square at 7 p.m. A temporary stage is set up in front of The Trellis restaurant and the whole spectrum of music, from folk to jazz, delights listeners. Summer Breeze on the Square is a joint effort of the Merchants Square Association, the City of Williamsburg, and James City County.

Description: This series has developed an enduring audience over the past 25-plus years. Sponsored each July by William and Mary’s theater department, the festival season of two Shakespeare performances in repertory offers a variety of the Bard’s works. The plays are performed alternately so that those in town for only a short period can attend a performance of each. The nightly curtain is at 8 p.m., and there are also 2 p.m. Sunday matinees. Tickets range from $10 to $25.

Description: The college’s theater, speech, and dance students stage four full-scale plays in addition to many smaller productions during the academic year. Season subscribers may see all four shows for the price of three. Matinees are at 2 p.m., and evening curtain is at 8 p.m. In addition, plays performed, written, and directed by students are presented in the Premiere Theater. The department usually stages one or two performances per semester. Past performances include A Little Night Music by Stephen Sondheim. Ticket prices vary and some performances are free.

Description: From September through June the Williamsburg Players produce plays of extraordinary quality in their cozy playhouse. The season usually consists of five plays, mixing little-known and more-famous works, with emphasis on modern and contemporary authors. The casts are all volunteers, but the Players draw upon more than 30 years of experience. Their staging and performances, thanks to their willingness to risk breaking conventions to advance their art, consistently receive the highest reviews and accolades. There are only 115 seats in the theater, and tickets go fast. General admission is $17, senior citizens and students pay $15.
