Description: As the title suggests, this installation is where ordnance used by the Atlantic Fleet is maintained and stored. On Route 143, just west of Lee Hall, it extends much of the length of the York River between Williamsburg and Yorktown. Ships being armed can be seen at the station’s piers from pullouts on the Colonial Parkway near its Yorktown end. This view will have to do, as the weapons station is a closed base.

Description: This bulk storage facility in York County belongs to the Fleet and Industrial Supply Center in Norfolk. The center’s loading piers in the York River are visible from the Colonial Parkway just where it turns inland from the river.

Description: Out in the country along the banks of the James River sits Fort Boykin Historic Park, which was created in 1623 to protect the settlers from Indians and raiding Spaniards. The fort, shaped in a seven-point star, has been involved in every major military campaign fought on American soil and still retains earthworks dating from the Civil War. According to legend, the guns of Fort Boykin sunk two British men-of-war in 1813. A gazebo overlooks the river, and a picnic area is available. The fort is a tad off the beaten path, so your best bet is to pick up a brochure and map at the Smithfield Convention and Visitors Bureau. Its regular hours are 8 a.m. to dusk seven days a week. Admission is free.

Description: As you leave town and head about 2 miles east on Route 10, you’ll come to Saint Luke’s Shrine. Built in 1632 and nicknamed “Old Brick,” this Episcopal church is the country’s only original Gothic church and the oldest church of English foundation in America. The church features its original traceried windows, stepped gables, and a rare mid-17th-century communion table. Since 1957 Saint Luke’s has been home to the oldest intact English organ in America. Constructed ca. 1630, the organ recently had its beautifully painted doors restored. This National Shrine is open Tues through Sat from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sun from 1 to 4 p.m. The shrine is closed during Jan; admission is free.

Description: Located in a shopping center just east of downtown, Cowling’s has everything for lunch and dinner, from Cajun specialties and seafood pasta dishes to fajitas, steaks, chicken, and ribs. A variety of burgers and sandwiches—from catfish to chili cheese dogs—round out the menu. Dinners range from $7 to $16. A kids’ menu has a number of options—all for less than $5—and desserts include such temptations as fried apple pie and a chocolate peanut butter pie topped with whipped butter frosting. Cowling’s is open seven days a week.

Description: Ken’s is a popular and friendly roadside restaurant that serves up great barbecue and ribs. If you love beef, the pit-cooked steaks are a good choice and come in regular and large sizes (for the heartier appetite). But even if you order the regular size, portions are huge and prices reasonable (an average entree is less than $10). Ken’s is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tues through Fri, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sat, and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sun.

Description: A family-run business since 1982, this old-fashioned ice-cream shop sells subs, deli sandwiches, salads, and, of course, ice-cream dishes. Belly up to the traditional soda fountain counter and please your palate with a banana split or triple scoop of chocolate chip mint. If you’d like to chow down on a sandwich or salad instead, you can expect prices to run from $3 to $7. The shop is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mon through Sat and 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sun.

Description: Since the spring of 1993, this delightful little eatery has served up tasty and unusual sandwiches to an adoring public. All breads are Smithfield Gourmet recipes, baked fresh daily. Cold pasta dishes and salads also are served, and specials start at $6.49. A variety of fresh-baked items—cookies, pies, cinnamon rolls, muffins, and a cake of the day—are available. Cheesecakes, in just about any flavor imaginable, are a house specialty. The cafe is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mon through Sat and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sun. It is also open for dinner Thurs through Sat from 6 to 9 p.m.

Description: A popular destination for boaters, Smithfield Station is one of our favorite haunts. It sits at the foot of a small bridge overlooking the Pagan River. The restaurant serves seafood, pork, pasta, and daily specials for lunch and dinner (the average price of an entree is $18). We especially like the house salad, which is prepared with a slightly sweet Italian-style dressing and baby shrimp. The stuffed flounder also comes highly recommended. After dining, stroll out on the deck that surrounds the restaurant and connects it to the marina or mosey along the boardwalk. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mon through Thurs, 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Fri, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sat and Sun.
