Description: This museum looks at wildfowl—everything from ducks and geese to songbirds—through art exhibits, interactive displays, and special demonstrations. The museum’s five galleries feature artwork and decoy carvings, including some that date from the turn of the 19th century. Overlooking the ocean, the museum is located in the 1895 deWitt Cottage, the last remaining oceanfront cottage from the late 19th century. The museum is open Tues through Sat from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sun noon to 5 p.m. From Oct through Feb the museum is closed on Mon. Admission is free, although donations are accepted.

Description: This intriguing attraction is the headquarters for the work of the late psychic Edgar Cayce, who resided in Virginia Beach and was best known for falling into a trance and diagnosing and prescribing cures for medical ailments. Each year A.R.E. hosts thousands of international visitors and researchers who have an interest in Cayce’s remarkable talents. There are free lectures, video and film presentations, ESP demonstrations, and daily tours. There’s even a meditation room overlooking the ocean and a bookstore with overflowing shelves. A.R.E. is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mon through Fri, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sat, and 12 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sun. Admission is free. Take care to park in the lot and not on the road as the local police are quick to ticket, especially in summer.

81. Old Cape Henry Lighthouse

Description: Construction of this lighthouse was authorized by George Washington and was completed in 1791 at a cost of $17,500. The edifice continued to guide mariners until it was replaced in 1881. The stone used in the structure came from the same Virginia quarry that supplied the White House, the Capitol, and Mount Vernon. Over the years the edifice has become the official symbol of Virginia Beach. The lighthouse is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning in mid-Mar and continuing through Oct. From Nov 1 to Mar 15 the hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed Thanksgiving, Dec 24, 25, 31, and Jan 1.

Description: The Sportsplex is America’s first stadium built specifically for soccer, but it is also used for football, rugby, and lacrosse. Home to the Piranhas, a women’s professional soccer team, the $10.5 million facility seats 6,000 spectators, but can be expanded to hold 30,000. Features include an 18-by-20-foot instant replay screen behind one goal and a high-tech sound system that can monitor the noise level of the stadium crowd and adjust the volume level accordingly. Ticket prices for soccer games range from $7 to $15. Rugby tournaments are held here also, and those tickets are $10 and up.

Description: This outdoor monument between Atlantic and Pacific Avenues pays tribute to famous Virginians who have made significant contributions to the country and the world. When the walk was dedicated on July 19, 1999, 13 of the original 24 inductees were represented at the ceremony, including representatives for Arthur Ashe, Pearl Bailey, Patsy Cline, Ella Fitzgerald, Patrick Henry, Robert E. Lee, Douglas MacArthur, James Madison, George C. Marshall, Edgar Allan Poe, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Captain John Smith, and Woodrow Wilson. Each year nominations are accepted for future honorees. The plaques on the walk are lit from above so that it can be viewed at night. Future plans call to expand the walk across Atlantic Avenue to the oceanfront boardwalk.

Description: Naval Station Norfolk is the world’s largest at 4,300 acres, and is home to five aircraft carriers (and 75 ships in all), and the U.S. Navy’s Atlantic Fleet command. You can get excellent views of the ships at their docks from either of the Hampton Roads bridge tunnels. But why settle for that? The Navy offers 45-minute guided tours of the base, conducted by naval personnel. Schedules vary with the season, from one a day in winter to up to nine per day in summer.
