Description: Windworks has a fleet of 30 vessels, ranging from 25-foot basic day-sailing vessels up to 43-foot cruising sailboats and catamarans. Windworks rents sailboat charters to nonmembers for half-day to multiday use, but nonmembers must include a qualified skipper (no single-handed sailing rentals).

Description: Lawn bowling is a fun sport that’s gaining quite a following in Seattle, so if you’re 10 or older, come to one of the city’s two public lawn bowling greens and see what it’s all about. Anyone can bowl at Jefferson Park Lawn Bowling Club; no experience is necessary. Annual memberships are offered, but first-time visitors can come by during “open bowl” for $5 nonmember entry and free lessons. A second lawn bowling green can be found at Lower Woodland Park, at N. 63rd Street and Whitman Place North; open to the public at all times, with free lessons and bocce and croquet in addition to lawn bowling.

Description: Camp Long is one of Seattle’s best-kept secrets. Located in West Seattle, this 68-acre park offers visitors an opportunity to enjoy nature, hike in the forest, camp overnight in rustic cabins, rock climb, and learn about natural history. Rental facilities include a lodge with one meeting room, kitchen space, 10 cabins, two covered picnic areas, group fire ring, and climbing rock. A talented staff of naturalists lead group environmental education and rock climbing classes. Programs at Camp Long are fun, interactive experiences for all ages.

24. Fay Bainbridge State Park

Description: Fay Bainbridge State Park is a 17-acre marine camping park with 1,420 feet of saltwater shoreline on the northeast corner of Bainbridge Island. The park offers sweeping views of Puget Sound, the Cascade Mountains, and two volcanoes, and features sandy beaches. The park has 10 tent sites, 26 utility sites, one dump station, two restrooms, and two showers. There are two kitchen shelters with electricity, one overlooking Puget Sound, plus 11 sheltered and 80 unsheltered picnic tables. The utility sites have water only and will accommodate RVs up to 30 feet in length. Some of the sites will take RVs larger than 30 feet. All camping is first-come, first-served.

If the tide is low, a visit to Carkeek Park can be turned into an all-day adventure by walking the Puget Sound shore from Carkeek’s fine beach to the Chittenden Locks.

Description: On the north end of Lake Union is Gas Works Park, with a spectacular view of the lake and the city beyond. In case you’re wondering about the name—yes, the site used to be a plant that manufactured gas from coal. The plant closed down in the 1950s, and the city acquired the site in 1962. Throughout the summer, Gas Works Park hosts all kinds of festivals: a 4th of July celebration, Seattle Peace Concerts, and even live performances of Shakespeare. When there is not a festival going on, Gas Works is a great place to have a picnic or fly a kite, and there is a play area with a large play barn (in the former compressor building of the factory) for kids. A beautiful sundial is situated at the top of the hill within the park.
