Contrary to the popular belief that it is an arts program, the Waldorf curriculum is academically rigorous, and by 8th grade, most students have had exposure to chemistry, biology, geometry, and algebra. The arts, both visual and performance, are integral to the program as well and permeate every aspect of learning in this integrated curriculum. Description: This is one of the best and oldest schools in the area for students with average IQs who have been diagnosed as learning disabled. With a 4-to-1 student-­teacher ratio, the school offers kids with learning disabilities individualized instruction and occupational, speech, and language therapy as well as self-­esteem groups. The goal of Havern is to ultimately reintroduce the child into mainstream education. The school currently has around 90 students.

Description: Founded in 1922 as a parish high school, Holy Family’s mission statement proclaims a Catholic-­Christian learning environment that “stresses academic excellence, fosters mutual respect, demands responsibility, and encourages self-­growth.” Besides the standard high-­school core curriculum, there are also courses in subjects such as theology, journalism, advanced computer applications, law, and drama. About 480 students study in grades 9 through 12.

Description: This alternative high school is for students in grades 9 through 12 who may not have been successful in other schools. Humanex is dedicated to the idea that every student can succeed in the proper environment. The school has a student-­teacher ratio of 7 to 1, a closed campus, progress reports to parents every two weeks, and parent notification within 20 minutes after school starts if the student does not show up. It is oriented to pupils who have been diagnosed with or thought to have learning disabilities, ADD, ADHD, HFA, Asperger’s disorder, twice-­exceptional learning, bipolar disorder, and many other unique needs. Enrollment is at around 60 students, male and female.

Description: Kent Denver has roots going back to the founding of the Kent School for girls in 1922 and the founding of the Denver Country Day School for boys. The two schools merged to create the present institution in 1974. Its challenging, college-­preparatory curriculum produced an average SAT score of 1,246 and an average SAT II score of 1,304 in the graduating class of 2004. Kent Denver has a campus of 200 acres with five academic buildings that include more than 40 classrooms and laboratories; six studios for music, dance, and art; two gymnasiums; six tennis courts; and 20 acres of playing fields. In grades 6 through 12, there are 672 students.
