Description: Like the other vessels in the southern Maine whale-watch fleet, First Chance travels to Jeffrey’s Ledge for its whale hunt. The very comfortable 80-foot Nick’s Chance makes the journey on a daily basis at 9 a.m. and again at 3 p.m. in July and August. In late May and from September through mid-October, the boat sails only on weekends. Passage is $48 for adults, $28 for children.

Description: Kylie Chance’s lobster cruise has quite the pedigree, having been written up in USA Today and featured on the Today Show. The tour takes passengers down the Kennebunk River, past the Bush family compound on Walker Point, and out to the open Atlantic, stopping to haul traps. As the captain and crew bait and haul traps, you’ll learn about the lifecycle of lobsters, their habits, loves, and hates, as well as the fishing industry and its importance to Maine. Added bonuses are trips to Bumpkin Island to see seabird colonies and fat seals, and a bit of lore about Kennebunk port to boot. All for $20. The hour-and-a-half runs ship out at 10 a.m. and noon, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. daily from Memorial Day through Columbus Day.

5. St. Anthony’S Shrine And Franciscan Monastery

Description: What a nice place to be a monk. The grounds here were designed by the Olmsted brothers, famous landscape architects of the early 20th century who did a lot of work in Maine, and it’s become known for its rhododendrons. A walking path explores the 25 acres here, and includes a boardwalk and a pavilion on the Kennebunk River.
