Description: Every year about 30,000 people flock to the waterfront streets of this historic fishing village to attend the Blue Crab Festival. Held late in May, this much loved festival features more than 150 arts-and-crafts booths with everything from paintings to brass and copper sculptures, wearable art, jewelry, wood carvings, and children’s goods. Food booths boast yummies including steamed crabs, grilled tenderloin, and pizza. The children’s area includes a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, and puppets. Entertainment promises widespread appeal; enjoy a variety of live musical performances, including jazz, country, bluegrass, and gospel. Admission is $5. Children five years of age and younger enter free.

Description: Founded in 1996, Murrells Inlet’s Blessing of the Inlet Festival continues to grow and receive regional and statewide support and recognition. Held throughout the fishing village that’s known for its delectable seafood, the daylong event is full of activities and games for the children, arts and crafts for adults, entertainment galore, and lots of delicious local specialties. There is something for everyone and every age at this family-flavored festival. In years past, children’s activities have included mural painting, face painting, a climbing wall, candy art, and the ever-popular “Dunking Tank.” There is no admission or parking charge, and the event is held rain or shine.

Description: As a Grand Strand Insider, you can always tell when “bike week” is fast approaching. Makeshift trading posts (mostly hawking metal and leather goods) spring up all along US 501, the roads begin to rumble and roar, tattoos cease to seem out of the ordinary, and bar owners are smiling ear to ear as they stock up on beer. Rated as one of the top five motorcycle events in the nation—and the oldest dealer-sponsored motorcycle event in the country—the 2010 rally will mark the 70th year on the Grand Strand. An estimated 300,000 cyclists roar into town for ten days in mid-May. A race is usually held on the Friday of the event at the Myrtle Beach Speedway.

Description: The annual Harborwalk Festival celebrates the historic city of Georgetown—South Carolina’s third oldest. Festivities are held every year during the last full weekend in June. This summer street festival offers live music on stages throughout the downtown area, food, games, and arts and crafts. The festival is enhanced by its beautiful downtown location—close to the Harborwalk, the Kaminski Museum, and all sorts of historical sites. It runs from 10 a.m. to midnight.

Description: Fireworks let loose on the north end of the Strand at 9 p.m. from just south of the runway at Grand Strand Airport. Since the airport is adjacent to Barefoot Landing, the complex offers some parking at the Alligator Adventure entrance. Besides Barefoot Landing as a vantage point to watch the show, try a spot anywhere along US 17 North from 33rd Avenue South in North Myrtle Beach to Barefoot Landing.

Description: The only venue in the Myrtle Beach area that shoots off fireworks on Independence Day every year is Broadway at the Beach.Broadway at the Beach usually begins its display at 10 p.m. and includes a light and music fountain show.However, throughout the summer the Second Avenue Pier (the second phone number at the beginning of this listing) holds a 25-minute fireworks display every Wed at 10 p.m., which it calls Beach Bang. It can be seen along the beach and in the downtown area.

Description: The Junior S.O.S. Shag Dance Party is a weekend for young folks under the age of 21. All the fun takes place in the Ocean Drive area of North Myrtle Beach. For one weekend only in mid-July, several of the adult shag clubs open their doors and hearts to the juniors to support them and help create a safe and fun event. Around 400 juniors attend this annual event, with more than 20 free Junior Dance Workshops, a Junior Mixed-Doubles Contest, a Juniors-Only Dance Party, a volleyball tournament, and other beach activities. Best viewing points cited are the Belin Memorial United Methodist Church parking lot, Captain Dick’s Marina, the Marshwalk, and the public boat landing in Murrells Inlet.Another south-end display begins at 9 p.m. as the city of Georgetown puts on its firecracker show. Description: Since 1984, more than 100 boats have gussied up for the Fourth of July and entertained the multitudes who watch from and picnic on the shores. From 14-foot fishing boats to 40-foot yachts, participating watercraft start the aquatic caravan at high tide at the jetties of Garden City Beach and proceed to Murrells Inlet. Public points of view to watch the flotilla are Captain Dick’s Marina, the Marshwalk, the Belin United Methodist Church, and the Murrells Inlet boat landing, all on US 17 Business in Murrells Inlet. Trophies are awarded to the “best-dressed” docks and boats. This event keeps growing because it is so much fun.
