My gut says most are coming from other parts of AL, which would explain why the statewide growth numbers are sluggish.
It's quite possible a number of in-state retirees are settling there, but I think there are quite a few snowbirds moving to the coast too.

The latest numbers from the Census Bureau shows Tuscaloosa at 100,287 on July 1, 2017.

July 1, 2018 populations have been released from another source that must have gotten preliminary numbers from Census, but they only had the top 200 cities and Tuscaloosa didn't quite make that list, so the 2017 numbers are the latest available.

The 2018 numbers should be on the Census.gov site very shortly, and most likely Tuscaloosa will show a substantial increase. I'm not sure why they are so late in issuing the yearly estimates because by the time they are released they're almost a year old.

Edit: Looks like county populations will be released in April (this month) and city populations in May. They'll be estimates, not actual counts. https://www.census.gov/programs-surv.../schedule.html

I will try to keep this page updated for Tuscaloosa as much as possible since I am now retired and have an interest in promoting T-town!
