Yeah, but I think that's understandable when you consider that really no city/metro on the South Atlantic coast is as big/influential as the Northeastern coastal cities. Miami is an exception but it's so culturally different that it's not really categorized as "East Coast" either, at least as far as I know. I think the situation is somewhat similar on the West Coast, as most people just think of California and seem not to include the Pacific Northwest (Seattle and Portland).

Atlanta is a "sunbelt" city filled to the brim with East Coast people who couldn't make it up North.

Atlanta is as much an east coast city as Miami is a southern city.

Atlanta is unique and that is what makes it great.
Or maybe it is all of those New Yorkers who did such a great job that they were recruited (or in some causes forced) to move to Atlanta to boost the economy.

You mean way up there in those uber-sophisticated cities like Providence, Allentown, Hartford and Newark? Down here in the piney woods we can only dream of places like that.

As stated by a poster, Atlanta is an "eastern" city, considering its place in the eastern United States, specifically the southeastern United States. Atlanta is simply too far inland to be considered "coast" of any thing. That said, it's not too far from the east coast, as though it's in the middle of the country or anything. I liken Atlanta's position in the southeast to a city like Harrisburg or Syracuse's position in the northeast region. Those cities aren't "east coast", but they're clearly in the east, the northeast specifically.

That said, we all know our region is the South, and it's the region Atlanta should be placed in.

I agree with those who say that the southeast coast is often ignored in talking about the "east coast". Northeastern elitism out of New York at its finest, courtesy of the media presence in that city.

We felt the same in the midwest, believe me.

According to the media, there's the East Coast, the West Coast, and flyover territory that gets mentioned occasionally in a special interest story.

East coast? No. Eastern city sitting on the cusp of the deep and upland south? Yes.

Many southern cities have "eastern" attributes. Even as far west as Houston. But when most think of the East Coast, they are thinking of the Mid-Atlantic and up, which in itself is very different from the southeast.

At the end of the day, Atlanta has far more in common with its southern peers than the urban areas of the north.

Allentown has its charms but it hardly seems that Atlantans are people who couldn't cut it there.

Billy Joel is fingernails on a blackboard to me but isn't there some truth in his lyrics?

Well we're living here in Allentown
And they're closing all the factories down
Out in Bethlehem they're killing time
Filling out forms
Standing in line.

Well our fathers fought the Second World War
Spent their weekends on the Jersey Shore
Met our mothers at the USO
Asked them to dance
Danced with them slow
And we're living here in Allentown.

But the restlessness was handed down
And it's getting very hard to stay

Well we're waiting here in Allentown
For the Pennsylvania we never found
For the promises our teachers gave
If we worked hard
If we behaved.

So the graduations hang on the wall
But they never really helped us at all
No they never taught us what was real
Iron or coke,
Chromium steel.

And we're waiting here in Allentown.
But they've taken all the coal from the ground
And the union people crawled away.
