I know someone who drives a vehicle about three miles to the train station with no problem. But try driving it to work, 15 miles, and it starts acting up. Perhaps that Escort is the same way.

I disagree. He'll get a much more intense blow from the car.

I'm not sure if it's "leaking" antifreeze, oil, or fuel, but if it's not leaking fuel or antifreeze you should be fine. If it's leaking oil you can pull over and put more oil in it. It sounds like you are in a dire situation, so I'm going to say make the trip in the daylight and make sure someone knows you are on your way in case you have trouble. If it is only 50 miles you should be fine, but if you hit heavy traffic you very well could be in your car for hours which would burn more fuel. 50 miles is nothing on gas for a car that small, so a half of a tank should be just fine - unless of course it's leaking fuel. It sounds like you don't have any money and can't afford to run out of gas, get the car towed or anything else so ask yourself, is it worth it to take the chance? If your answer is yes, carefully plan the time where you can avoid as much traffic as possible so that you get "highway" mileage out of your car instead of the horrible stop and go gas burning issue.

Good luck to you! My heart goes out to you in your difficult situation.

You need to stuff some rags into the tank so they can soak up the leak on the inside before it works it way to the outside and starts dripping.

^^^Im sure her motor is alot cleaner than the $100 Escorts, hell either one of them is good for the Pile Driver

just be careful of those you find walking the street late at night, for $20 you get alot more than a quick drive

My wife's '95 Taurus leaks gas when it is more than 3/4 full, so she just never fills it up. She's driven it about 30K miles that way. The garage quoted her about $600 to replace the tank. They said there is no point trying to put in a tank from a wreck, because a tank that old, by the time you get it removed from the junker, it will leak too.

Gas tanks are one of those expensive and fragile Achilles Heel features that reduce the lives of cars that would otherwise last forever.
