At work we park in a parking garage. I’ve noticed some vehicles with reverse lights when vehicle is turned off. It always caught me off guard whisking they’re about to back into me. Why did these companies set up their vehicles to turn on reverse lights when the vehicle is turned off?

On a floor shift the pattern is top to bottom Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Low and/or M (if any.) So when someone shifts slowly from Drive to Park, they pass through Reverse, and that will momentarily turn on the reverse lights. If I had to guess either they have some kind of delayed off feature or their switch is stuck if it lasts more than a few seconds.

I think that Hemlock answered your question correctly, but I'm just curious what you mean with the word "whisking" as used in your post? I'm not trying to be a language police. I'm just trying to understand what you're saying... or maybe it is some sort of typo..

I've noticed my neighbor's GM SUV when turned off, their reverse lights are on even when they leave the car.

I notice it mostly with GM vehicles of a certain age but not sure if any other makers does this.

pedestrian illumination. the body module should turn them off after some delay. I have the same on my Grabowski and when I shut off and RAP keeps the radio going, the fact the reverse lights come on turn on the backup camera. So I can see if there are perps, squatch, or boogens behind me before I get out...

There are a bunch of models of cars where the reverse lights stay on for 30-60 seconds after the car is turned off. It drives me nuts because it signals that the car is about to reverse. It also causes complacency. I have no idea why some cars are configured like this.

You have reminded me that on my 1974 Nova the reverse lights are not working. I checked the sockets, bulbs and fuse so it will require looking into the switch at some point. Those were not common on cars before about 1965, and then most were options. They became common and probably required by 1967.
