You said, "No Amish kid in Ohio gets vaccinated."

If that is not what you meant, why did you say it?

You also said unvaccinated Amish children do not get sick. They do indeed get sick. So that statement is false, too.

Why do people that are vaccinated and have there kids vaccinated worry about ones that don't?
The reasons that all children should be vaccinated have been explained by me and others repeatedly in other vaccination threads that appear in CDF. The problem is that the anti-vaccination crowd doesn't want to accept something which has been proven over and over again. The primary reason that all children need to be vaccinated is that vaccines are given not only to prevent an individual from getting a disease, they are given to prevent an individual from spreading that disease to others. Vaccination of a population is done to create "herd immunity". The concept is that you wipe a disease out if you vaccinate 80% to 90% of a population.

Some children have allergies to certain vaccines and cannot take them for that reason. In a few other cases, vaccination is not effective because it is given incorrectly or the vaccine is out-of-date or ineffective. Because these events occur it is critical that we try to vaccinate the entire population. That way, the handful of children who cannot be vaccinate or improperly vaccinated will still be protected.

Quote:
I always wondered that. If your kid is vaccinated then why should you care if soemone else isn't? Your kid can't get sick, they've been vaccinated.
See above. BTW, if you read that explanation and you still don't get it this conversation is probably a waste of time. Suffice it to say, most people do get it.

That's a nice self-rightous, condescending post you wrote though. There is plenty of evidence that vaccines don't work as advertised. But you choose to believe everything that western medicine tells you. Sound like a sheeple.
I probably am a bit self-righteous about vaccination because it is the cheapest, most efficient, and most effective way to deal with infectious disease. One hundred and forty years ago, two out of every three children born didn't reach adulthood because of deaths from infectious diseases such as measles, whooping cough, and diptheria. Vaccination is an enormous public health accomplishment that does not receive its due, largely because it has been so successful that people take it for granted. Yet, a few crackpots in society like Jenny McCarthy invent and fabricate lies and half-truths to try to scare parents into not doing that which has been proven time and time again to prevent deadly disease on a wide scale.

And that's nice that you think adults have "some" rights when it comes to the government telling them what they can do with their bodies. How benevolent of you.
Perhaps, you can explain to me why you think an adult should have the right to make a life/death decision for an innocent child and possibly expose other children in public school to the risk of deadly infectious disease. Your defense of "your rights" is not exactly making me wave the flag and sing the Star Spangled Banner. There is something called "phony freedom". This is when people believe they are losing rights, but aren't really. Vaccination gives us more freedom than it takes away, by rendering us safe from these deadly infectious diseases. In 99.99% of the cases there is no problem associated with it at all. Other times, side effects are minor like a sore arm or slight fever.

Too bad you don't think people should be "entitled to your own beliefs" Guess your inner-totalitarian is loose. You might want to put it away. You sound like a commie thought police agent.
Well, than there are people who imagine conspiracies every where they go. Food is a conspiracy. Fluoridating the water supply is a conspiracy. We need lots of tin foil hats for all the nuts in this country.

Quote:
P.S. I have no idea if people should get vaccinated or not. It's up to them, I reckon. I haven't got a flu shot in 20 years and haven't got the flu. It's obvious though that western medicine is wrong all the time and I think it's foolish to ignore evidence that vaccines don't always work and they can cause serious side effects in some people.
Nothing in life works 100%. However, the efficacy of vaccines is quite high and the evidence lies in the absence of epidemics of red measles, polio, and diptheria. Most people can see that. The reason you probably haven't gotten the flu in 20 years is either luck, or the fact you've been around others who have had their flu shot. Some people repeatedly make exaggerated claims about "injuries from vaccines". These are not non-existent, but they are rare. Once again, you are someone making this claim without supporting documentation. Cite your sources for this statement, so that I may review them. The FDA will not a approve a vaccine for use unless research demonstrates that is safe and effective. Safe and effective means that the the vaccine, by far and away, contains far more benefits than risks to the general population.

I feel sad every time I come to the B'ham board and this is the thread getting the most play. I wonder if there is a vaccine for that.

That's stupid. DRINKING Flouride is not the same as applying to your teeth at the dentist.

Right. Fluoridated water doesn't help your teeth... just like soft drinks don't hurt your teeth. /swt

I clicked on your link, only to see it's from Natural News.....the equivalent of every conspiracry site rolled into one. NN is a phenomenal load of anti-science, paranoid crap, which exists only to scare people to death. No thanks.

"When Natural News began, it was basically the blog and sales portal of anti-pharmaceutical activist Mike Adams. His basic premise has always been the Big Pharma conspiracy, the idea that the medical industry secretly wants to keep everyone sick, and conspires with the food industry to make people unhealthy, all driven by a massive plot of greed to sell poisonous medicines. Adams appears to have become a protégé of Alex Jones, for he now writes on Natural News at least as many police state conspiracy articles as he does anti-science based medicine articles. They carry ads for each other on their sites as well."

Right. I'm going to trust a fear-mongering site which tells folks the NWO is implanting tracking chips in the populace, in order to easily kill them with a flip of a switch if they don't do the government's bidding.
Give me a break.

Had you any intellectual curiousity, you could have clicked on the "American Dental Association" link I provided, which states:

Quote:
The American Dental Association unreservedly endorses the fluoridation of community water supplies as safe, effective and necessary in preventing tooth decay...

Since the inception of water fluoridation, the American Dental Association has carefully monitored scientific research regarding safety and efficacy. Based on that review, the Association has continually reaffirmed water fluoridation as the most effective public health measure for the prevention of dental caries and strongly urges that its benefits be extended to those served by communal water systems.
Note that the ADA is "the oldest and largest national dental society in the world... the leading source of oral health related information for dentists and their patients."
