Completely agree! UAB has been the economic mainstay of this city, and what they are asking for from the city and county is really quite modest. Especially considering the huge benefits that will come about because of this project.

This is Lyons-Harrison (7th Avenue at 19th St South, looking toward 20th Street), so I assume they want to gut this building and redo the exterior? This was my home all through grad school back in the late 80's and early 90's. It would be really cool to see it updated into a modern genomics center. Hopefully they will also remodel the matching eyesore on the right, which connects to the VA Hospital as it passes over 19th Street South.

The BBJ article has renderings of the planned project. It actually looks great! The city, county, and state definitely needs to approve the funding, because this is a huge economic win for everyone involved!

Here is a video explaining the project. It includes early renderings of the development. Actually looks great!

That's a crazy high price tag for a building renovation / addition. I wonder if a lot of that expense is related to equipment.

I would think the research equipment needed for a facility like this would be pretty expensive, but I can also see how massive redevelopment project of this magnitude could reach $70 million.

Another one that'll help is Half Shell Oyster House opening in the former Absco fireplace building.
