To college students in Canada throw temper tantrums on campus and expect to go unpunished like a certain groups of American college students are doing now?
Protest for political causes on university campuses is nothing new. I don’t agree with the idea of universities divesting from Israel, or BDS at all, but it’s their right to protest. What happened in the US Columbia University the other day was horrible and those acts of vandalism and trespassing should be prosecuted but I am not aware of the protests happening at schools here crossing that line. If they do, then yes, place charges on the perpetrators. I remember being super political like these students are when I was their age. As you read more about foreign policy and how the government works with time your opinions will evolve to reflect the complexity of the subjects. I’d imagine most people at these are well meaning. However, there is a lot of disgusting language that is utterly reprehensible such as the idea that Israelis should leave their country or the common “zionists” dogwhistle which may be used in naivety but is pretty racist in the way it’s being used by many. I believe in a two state solution and that Israel should remain a country, therefore I am a Zionist. That’s all that word truly means but it’s being co-opted by antisemitic conspiracy theorists.
