I heard from someone that alkaline water was more 'hydrating.' I never looked into it myself, but it made sense. So I would buy alkaline water regularly if it was there.
One time, the cashier said proudly: "you know about alkaline water?" I was surprised so said not really, and he went on this big explanation on how it prevents cancer. First time I heard it, never bothered to dig into it. TBH, I don't believe it. Doesn't mean it's not true. Just the odds of it being true are so small, I never bothered to research some fantastic claim like that.
Now, my advice is for your relative to follow all conventional treatment their doc prescribes. If you don't trust your doc, find a better one. And drink alkaline water on the side. No downside to that. And if it works, it will work, but this way you don't hang your hat on the long shot.
