That's two votes for Hyperthyroid and high blood pressure. I'm going to call my vet on Monday to see if she did, in fact, check for these two possibilities. Thanks!
Good idea. Please let us know what you find out.

Dear Katzpur ~ I wonder if Annie has a mouse toy? If not, then I think that you should get her one (without catnip).
Leave it around on the floor in the same room that Annie spends the night in.
It's just a little hunch that I have so why not try it?
Doubtful as it may sound to you or anyone, what is going on is also an indication of the cat's hunting instincts. I am hoping that Annie will carry that mouse around while making odd noises in the night.
I am very, very close to the cats....I do hope you try it.

HappyWishes to you and Annie,

It's doesn't sound doubtful in normal cases. And it's a good idea. I have/had several cats who carry their special toys around in the night and make hunting howling noises.
But...this is new behavior for this particular senior cat. When something new like this starts up out of the blue in a senior cat, there is usually cause for concern.
What ever happened? I just found this blog. I have a tuxedo cat that could be Annie's twin -- right down to the two-toned lips and "boots". He had thyroid disease, I'm not sure which one but they cured him with radioactive iodine therapy. He was fine for 3 years then he started to lose weight again, this time he has kidney failure (diagnosed 6 months ago). He is 2 months shy of his 17th birthday. He has always been vocal and I know exactly the cry you are talking about. He seems to be doing it more and louder now, and am concerned he is in pain. He is always hungry, but only take a couple bites of food at a time. I am struggling with the idea of euthanization, I'm not sure if he is ready. I took him to the vet, but she wasn't much help. She wanted to run a bunch more tests and I said I wouldn't do that. It's too stressful. I want to let him live the rest of his comfortable days and then end it. I just can't tell if it is time or not...I don't want to rush it.
