In emergency situations, the cell phone provider can gather data from nearby towers, and compare the relative signal strength, and track someone down to within about 300ft or so, but it can take up to 30-40 minutes to triangulate the persons position, so if they're moving it can be almost impossible.

Plus, it is illegal to track a person without the proper legal authority, which the OP does not have. Just because he/she can't control their kids is not a matter for the police.

You can't just hop online and track someone down, it's not that easy.
Actually, most carriers do offer some kind of tracking service.

Verizon, for instance, offers Chaperone.

Entertainment and Apps from Verizon Wireless - Family Locator

This allows you to track their location, and you can set limits for them to travel within that area. If they get out of that range, you get a message saying they are out of area.

What kind of phone does your son have? If its a blackberry, a google phone, or the i phone, you can use google latitude to track his location. latitude doesn't work without one of those phones being used by the user being tracked. Also, as others have said, they can turn it off. However, Chaperone, Kidconnect (T-mobile), and whatever AT&T offers aren't able to be turned off. Of course they cost usually around 10 bucks a month or so. They also won't work if your son turns his phone off, but you get a message if he does that to.

Like I said before the son would have to physically enable this feature (and the location on), good luck getting him to install it on his phone, and the $10/month is outrageous.

I do know what I am talking about.

If the account is in my name, I can have any phone under my account enabled with GPS tracking (if the phone itself is so equipped).

And, you have no permission to use actual names on these boards. I have asked the moderators to remove it.

You use my name all the time, erik.

And now you're agreeing with me, I said before you have to enable the feature on the phone, and even then unless you pay for servies like the Chaperone, you can't track someone down.

Actually, I said it that if it is my account, all the phones (numbers) on that account belong to me. Therefore, I have the right to activate (or deactivate) any service for a particular phone. And this includes the GPS tracking.

I have/had a phone where I added the GPS tracking and the person who uses the phone did not approve of me doing so nor even knows it has been done.

Also, the carrier is not assessing any charge for this tracking.

Thank you for your post - KarmaPhx obviously was misinformed or misunderstood what could be done.

Its a good service they offer - and one where parents, if they are providing a phone to their kids, can keep track of their kids - and the kids may never know it. It also is a good idea to keep track of the phone numbers the kids are calling (or get calls from) and the texting habits - and with these services you can do all of that.

Again - thanks for the post

I am not misinformed, I know what I am talking about when it comes to GPS tracking. You can't track someones phone without physically enabling it, and that is a fact.

You are correct. And I, and the other poster said that very same thing. What we also said though is, if the phone is on my account, and I am letting someone use, I do not have to get that persons permission to enable the GPS. You indicated that the persons permission - and that is not the case.

What I have said from the begining is you cannot track someone down without their consent or without physically enabling the feature on their phone, in the OP's case she can't track down her son without access to his phone, so if you agree with me what was the point of arguing?

Why not just tell him to come in earlier?
