I've lived in Hixson (which is a northern suburb of Chattanooga) for six years and the only crime I've personally seen is a purse snatching about 5 years ago. Not to say there isn't crime...but it doesn't seem particularly crime-ridden. I've spent a lot of time in North Shore and downtown (I work downtown) and I have never felt unsafe. I've never seen a prostitute that I know of....I have seen a few homeless people occasionally. It's a fun little city. I think if you take natural precautions it's safe enough.
