My antique friends used to call the homemade stuff "Granny Arbuckle" meaning worthless. But this is very old and the glaze seems more sophisticated. Super dirty. Sorry. I'm probably going to dunk the whole thing in soapy water.

Are there any identifying marks on the underside of the lamp? And yes, go ahead and wash it. No need to apologize.

The only old stuff never to clean would be old coins, delicate fabrics and Hummels. The value of old coins can't be irreparably ruined by a cleaning. Collectors are really picky about the surface of old coins. And Tarn-X is the worst.

Well we (he) plugged it in and it works. I'll be a little careful cleaning it. The whole thing is ceramic(?) Except the electrical components. I'm cleaning out a (basically) trash-out for a tag sale. I'm on the fence about it.

The lamp described below is fancier but similar in design. Note the value.

I'd research this carefully before doing anything.

Thanks. Happy in Wyoming. I'll look up more by that artist! Oops. It's not an artist. This isn't glass. It's ceramic-ish. I doubt it's china. It's like stuff antique planters and nick-nacks are made out of. My brain isn't working well.

Porcelain? That's not junk. An artist's name would be unusual since it's a mass-produced product. Mass-produced doesn't mean junk either.

BTW: china is a type of porcelain.

If you love the lamp... does it really matter if it's collectible or not? Just use it and continue to love it.

I have several mystery items in my collection that I love, even though they aren't made by a known artist or art pottery company. Not everything in a collection needs to be worth a lot of money in order to be cherished.
