Methinks you're getting your hopes up with talks of a city-county merger. Plus I'm sure the folks in the county want nothing to do with the dysfunction, real or perceived, of the city.

Either way, a new courthouse is certainly overdue. I hope it happens sooner rather than later.

City-County Consolidations

I wouldn't think so, given historic relations between Columbia and Richland County. Also, I wouldn't know how it would work given that part of the city extends into Lexington County in the Harbison area.

Here's a pretty good read on the subject from a SC perspective: County Govt

The most we could reasonably expect is for some functions between the city and county to consolidate, but even some of those are not without roadblocks. Remember the proposal to merge the county sheriff's department with the municipal police department a few years ago?

I dont recall that, but then again, I can see it never came to fruition; so point taken ha. Thanks for the links. Yeah Columbia and its surrounding urban areas have trouble becoming one, so a whole county? Yeaah. I dont know if I personally would have a problem with it or not (I live in Lexington county though haha), but it would seem uncharacteristic of Columbia.

Thanks for the link.. interesting read on being annexed or the creation of a new County. The area around Ballentine at one time wanted to become its own County.. but they didnt pass the "muster".. I think it was to be called Lake County or something to that effect....
