Planning Begins for Redevelopment of Scioto Peninsula

Planning has begun on the redevelopment of the Scioto Peninsula, the 56-acre site that holdes COSI and Veteran's Memorial. Along with the Scioto River project, this development was also part of the Downtown Strategic Plan from 2010 that had 12 specific projects. 2 of them were announced today as moving forward. This should be a pretty massive redevelopment project with residential, office and retail space.

Developer plans apartments at Columbus Commons | The Columbus Dispatch

So it looks like the new Columbus Commons park Downtown will be getting hundreds of new residential units. Constructing residential buildings on the High Street side of the park was in the orignial plans, but no one expected it to happen this soon.

The project details are:
-$50+ million dollars in investment
-2 6-story buildings
-600 new residential units
-46,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, both along High and on the park's side as well
-Swimming pool overlooking the park
-Construction is to begin this coming August and be completed by 2014.

It's amazing to see how Columbus' downtown is quickly turning the corner. The riverfront projects, new parks, dozens of new restaurants, a new grocery, and tons of new residential projects just in the last 6 months to a year. Big projects like this will only be catalysts for even more projects down the road.

There is still one lot left to build, and it is planned to have an office tower.

Wow, can't believe these apartments are going up so quickly - thought it would be another 5 or 6 years before this happened. That area of downtown needs more activity, so these apartments, combined with the Lifestyle apartments they built a block or two west of there and the Commons park should really help out the new businesses that have recently opened there like DeNovo Restaurant.

For much of the last decade a lot of the commercial, residential and office development downtown was really focused on the Arena District and the northern part of downtown. It now seems like the southern part of the downtown and the Gay Street corridor (the Neighborhood Launch area in particular) are seeing some activity.

Totally agree. Downtown still has far to go, but it's night and day from what it was in 1999 when Coleman first came into office.
