Wrong. The current NC Gov't is controlled by extremists. They are not "cleaning up a mess."

They're pushing an extreme agenda that the majority of the states does not want. We've seen the failed conservative experiment play out since Reagan, but they keep pushing it to provide their own socialism.

Eventually the conservatives will run out of working people's money to take and rape, but they aren't doing destroying the middle class yet.

Just wanted to clear that up. I hope that the thread can get back on track now, without ridiculous AM radio talking points being pushed here.

Ok well I gave you the stark differences in that post. I hope that helped.

I hope you posted this in the Raleigh forum too - I've found it's necessary in order to get both sides of the same coin.

Very good schools, costs are much more in control than what you see in Ohio. UNC is rated #1 as the best value public university in the US. 10 Best Public College Values, 2013-Kiplinger

There are many changes happening in NC government that I believe are positive. NC (Raleigh) government turned Republican controlled this year for the first time in over 100 years (GOP veto-proof majorities). There are major changes happening in NC government, most of it to clean up the mess that the past Dems have created, man Gov. Bev Perdue, Easley were the worst in the country, I don't know how Easley avoided prison time but I digress.. Yes the libs are in uproar as they all want their handouts but my taxes are higher in NC then when I lived in OH. This is beginning to change. As M Thatcher once said 'problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money (reference Detroit, Pittsburgh, WI, IN to name a few).
The same government that legislates against climate change... yeah I'm sure they have education as a top priority when they thumb their noses at actual science. "Don't worry about coastal erosion, folks, we outlawed it!"

The GOP is ruining NC. Only extreme conservatives would believe otherwise.

Exactly. NC has been long known as one of the more progressive, middle-ground states in the South. It's heading toward Mississippi status.

Default Triangle vs Columbus

This is a no brainer RDU. Durham alone tops Columbus, it's no even fair to add the triangle. #ACC UNC, DUKE, NC STATE, and a bit out there's Wake Forest. Ohio State (btw I like the football team ;-)) is the only college people are familiar with. Also, I've never seen Columbus on the top 50 places to live in the US. In 2013, Raleigh was the fastest growing city and top place to start a business (welcome Redhat!). In 2014, Durham is #4 place to live in the US right now, not to mention Apex, Cary and other places in the state. Better jobs are here in the triangle, hence we get paid more; i'm 34 and make six figures. I see so many Ohio natives in the NC more than ever, including my wife she's from Columbus and she hates it compare to the triangle. Perform Tripadvisor NC vs OH.. It's more to do in NC. Don't get me wrong OH have some beautiful places as well! But it's not like the Old North State, and I'm from VA,Beach. ;-)

Forgive my typos if any, I replied to this post on this tiny Iphone5s.

1. Eliminates 9,306 education positions, including 5,184 teachers, 3,850 teaching assistants and 272 support positions.

2. No pay increases for educators. NC was 46th in teacher pay in 2012. This new budget will likely put it dead last.

3. $50 million is going to school vouchers.

4. Eliminates career status for all teachers.

5. Teachers will receive no additional pay for additional degrees, which means that continuing education is no longer valued.

6. Grades schools A-F based 80% on standardized test scores and 20% on growth. Zero other variables considered.

7. Eliminates the Teaching Fellows Program, which was considered a national model for teacher recruitment.

8. Targeted funding for textbooks cut $77.4 million, classroom supply by $45.7 million, English proficiency (directly targeted at immigrants) by $6 million.

9. No cost of living wage adjustments.

I'm not sure if this is just for public schools or if higher education is also being targeted. Either way, terrible news for education in the state.

When it comes to people being friendly, you get what you put out, period. People are no less friendly in one place over another. It's not some weird cultural thing to be more rude in Columbus than Raleigh. Treat people with respect and friendliness and you will get that back. I've found that true all over the US and in other nations. I do think Midwesterners are more blunt than Southerners are, but that's not being rude, imo.
That person mentioned Colleges. NC does have better colleges. Now public schools we are in turmoil. Texas and VA are recruiting heavily in NC to lure teachers away.

Columbus has been on MANY bests lists, including places to live. I've posted many myself on here. There are probably at least a dozen in the Development thread.

Northern migration to NC is actually declining significantly. Take a look at mobility figures if you don't believe me. For example, Northern state migration to the Raleigh metro dropped 17.2% from the 2006-2010 to 2007-2011 period. 2008-2012 numbers come out later this year, but from what I'm seeing, those trends are continuing. But it wasn't just Northern migration areas in NC were losing. Raleigh's domestic migration from the rest of the South dropped almost 10%, and from the West, 99.1%!
Charlotte had drops across the board as well, so it's not just one area of the state. And it's not happening just in NC, but across the South. Only a few metros in Texas have maintained or increased their domestic migration trends from my research so far. Atlanta's migration is in freefall, for example.

Meanwhile, Columbus' migration from the rest of the North increased 8.2%, from the West, it was up 26.7%, and from the South, no change. This coincides with most Northern metros increasing domestic migration from these areas, or at least not getting any worse. In the case of Northern migration especially, any increases mean fewer people are leaving the region, which is probably an early indicator that the North's economic conditions, which have been the main driver of region to region relocation, are improving enough to keep people around.

Ohio has much higher tourism dollars than NC. In 2013, NC did about $20 billion in tourism. The same year, Ohio did about $30 billion. All this without the much hyped beaches. If there is less to do in Ohio, how is this possible? Either there are more tourists spending money in the state, or fewer tourists are spending more money per person (or both). Either way, both indicate more attractions.

Give it time. Now that public education is being or has been gutted, higher education is next.

jbcmh81, I can't see that happening in Higher Ed. But public education, I'm disgusted with NC education system and it's embarrassing. NC has the nerve to say Education Lottery while our teachers struggle, makes me sick every time i think about it.

I've been on upwardly mobile pulled some data, that's why I mentioned Durham alone beats Columbus. Now comparing Columbus to Charlotte, come on jbcmh81 there's no comparison Columbus doesn't have Amtrak and someone mentioned public transportation earlier. Also, Carolinianas simply make more money than Ohioans (see data below).

We can go on all night which is better. This has been a battle since the Wright Brothers (Ohioans) flew their plane on our beaches, Hence we are first in flight Everyday is a Carolina Day when you look at the sky it's Carolina Blue. Trust me, come to Downtown Raleigh and you will see some many Ohio Tags and Ohio State banners. Ohians have a nerve to say OH is better but living in NC. I'm confused lol.

3 Cities out of NC made the top 100 for 2014.
