If you are looking off-campus, you probably want to stay west of Summit (I wouldn't go much past indianola), north of 12th, and south of Oakland. The I am not very familiar with the south side of campus, so I can't comment on that. I lived for a year on Indianola and Lane, and two years on Oakland and Neil, and never had any problems. That being said, I think I was on the edge of the 'safe' area. In general, though, it's more about how you are than where you are that is going to determine your safety.

The closest thing to scary I've seen in Columbus is probably the Milo-Gragin area, mostly because it's pretty dangerous has a lot of rundown looking areas and it's isolated. The Bottoms/Franklington is probably the most rundown area in Central Ohio but it didn't come off as scary or dangerous to me, just poor and rundown.

I lived in South Linden near 24th and Cleveland for a short time, it's the hood but it wasn't scary to me. Same thing with Whittier & Lockburne, but once you get near and around Livingston it's worse. Same thing with King-Lincoln, E Main, and other areas of the near eastside.

East of campus area. Where you see the houses boarded up.

South Linden

East of Parsons Ave

Driving Park area (most likely #1 scariest area)

The area around Sullivant and Central is a real pit.

I've had a home in Clintonville, about 6 bocks north of north broadway for over 8 years now. I've never locked my doors.(Well, 95%) My Dog is scary, but the neighborhood is the best. Huge old trees, light traffic, bohemian i guess, but it's my favorite part of town.

Yep, that's defintely one of the worst parts of town. Although, it's "off the beaten path" so there's no reason to ever end up there.

Honestly though, the west side in general is pretty craptastic. There's some isolated decent pockets, but otherwise not much to recommend it at all.

The East side is SCARY. A buddy of mine lived there, and wow, can I tell you, it was like visiting a third world country. It was close to anarchy there. People shooting at night like it was a game, drug dealers parading the streets. It's weird.

Have a friend looking at an apartment for us few blocks east of campus, Woodruff/Iuka (just west of Indianola, I think, by the Presbyterian church). Is this area safe? The few people we asked in the area seemed to think so, but we are females and really concerned about safety. This is last minute, unexpectedly, so our apt. options are limited. We have some evening classes and are worried about walking back. Any insight appreciated.

I'm not very familiar with the area, but I'd say it's a toss up. I had a buddy I used to work with that lives there.
