It's disgusting. Even the authorities are "defending" what happened. But what do you want? This is redneck country.

However, the child and the parent(s) will always have to deal with the little girl being killed by her brother. Guilt is the worst jail sentence you can ever get.

Ah the parents. Few days ago someone entered a house and stabbed an 8 year old girl to death, they 12 year old brother found her. Where were the parents? No a word about it because somehow leaving children home alone is ok. The 12 year old maybe, the 8 year old is going to open a door.

Here, we have the same thing, parents with their heads in some dark place thinking life is grand.

What kills kids almost more than anything else? Opening the kitchen cabinets and drinking cleanser.

Prosecutors usually refrain because the idea is that the parents are already and will suffer enough. Bad move, when the parent is negligent, there is no such thing as enough suffering.

Ask most parents these days what it means to be a parent.

Listen carefully. I bet the first word is usually "I". Think about that.

Leaving children alone is NOT okay. So many parents seem to be irresponsible these days.

A responsible parent is one who teaches their children firearms safety.

It's an attitude of some parents that worries me. I'm talking about parents who don't bother to teach their children anything about the dangers of firearms or how to handle them safely. Not teaching your kids about guns could be dangerous - what happens if they are around one at a friend's house or some other place? I knew what to do - my family taught me about firearms safety from a very young age. Sadly not all children learn the same message.

This is far beyond the scope of an "accident". This is reckless homicide IMO, and the parents should be charged as such.

I agree that leaving a loaded gun, just propped in the corner of the living room, instead of unloaded in the locked gun case should result in some type of charges for the parents.

With the current NRA fueled hysteria, expect more stories like this. It's being portrayed as patriotic to give young kids guns.

The problem is discerning who is irresponsible before tragedies like this occur.

I don't care HOW many lessons a kid has in handling guns safely, or whether his mom stepped outside or not. He is TOO DAMNED YOUNG to even touch a gun unless it's in his parent's hands and he only pulls the trigger at a target. Carnivals have more safety rules.

C'mon, real kiddie guns that shoot real kiddie bullets for little kiddies? Pitiful.
