Where's the father in this picture? Why didn't anyone make sure the rifle had been completely discharged before putting it away? And why wasn't it under lock and key?

Why wouldn't they?

I wasn't much older than that when I got my first gun. It stayed in my parents room. I learned about gun safety and how to shoot.

It's sad that some people are irresponsible parents but that's just the way the world is.

And it sounds like the parents won't be facing a negligence charge for leaving a loaded gun within easy access of children.

Which is a crime in itself.

Mom was probably outside having a smoke.

Responsible parents' klds have accidents, too. Unless you define "responsible" in retrospect, as parents whose kids never had an accident, or did stupid things but by sheer luck got away with it, so therefore must have been responsible.

Is there a presumption here that women are not capable of raising children? And if there was a father (coming home drunk and beating the mother or gambling away his paycheck) this wouldn't have happened? Most families without fathers are better off without him. The father, who has visitation one day a week and takes the kids to McDonalds, is probably who gave him the gun.

Mom said she went outside just for 3 minutes like it would have been prevented if she was inside. If the loaded gun is there and it is resting in one corner and you have a kid that is 5 got this thing in "gift" disaster is bound to happen.

Still I don't understand why would a 5 year old get a gun or play with it? I understand if kids are probably 8 or 9, but 5 come on!

If a person is a fool, having children will not change it. It's a tragedy that happens here and there. Several years ago, it was in the news about a child taught how to shoot, so, soon after the lessons, he went next door and killed the neighbors. I'm not anti-guns. I'm anti-children having guns and having any opportunity to get one.
