Gambling is the toughest addiction to get "under control" because it is the only addiction where you can win. Next hand of cards, pull on the slot, next race... could be the winning one. Drugs, alcohol, no upside.

Just to illustrate the other side of the Ledger ....

In New Jersey, the Casinos used to run subsidized bus trips down the Parkway to Atlantic City -- Free Bus Ride, $20 in chips, and a Meal Ticket for the Lunch Buffet. There was a lady at work whose daughter lived just outside of AC. This Lady would take the Free Bus Ride, grab an extra Meal Ticket and meet her Dear Daughter at the Buffet. She would spend the afternoon eating Peel 'em Shrimp and catching up with DD. After a long leisurely lunch she would nurse the $20 bucks into the Slots. When those chips were gone......she would wait for the Bus Ride back home !!

An All Expense Paid Visit with her Daughter. Total Expenditure - Zero Dollars.

Don't feel sorry for the Casinos. The rest of the folks on that Bus probably blew Thousands.

only game I play at the casino is poker (real texas hold 'em, not the 3 card poker). I'd rather test my luck against other players than the house. I only go once a month at most and buy in with about $150. Usually I break even or win a few bucks. When I get $5 free play that's when I use the slots

For the big gamblers the casino is their bank. For all I know (I don't gamble), maybe the "whales" now get set up to draw from the casino automatically.... although they must go to the cage, still, don't they to buy chips? Or maybe you can now get chips dispensed from a macnine?

ATM machines are often privately owned, so I suppose a casino could own their own ATM machines and have them set to dispense high limits. After all, the casino is happy to take as much of your cash as they can pry out of your wallet and they will make it as easy as possible. Plus they have staff and cash to reload the machine as often as necessary.

As for casino horror stories, I've never met a gambler who will admit to losing money. They only talk about the times they won, not the balance of wins and losses.

No and I don't know anyone who gambles.

I've seen lots of retired people on the slots in Vegas and find this sad to watch. I go to sleep and the next morning I go to the breakfast and the same people still sit there, staring into the machine with glassy eyes.

I'll drive by the pawn shop half an hour before opening and already see a line of people standing there. Crass. No thanks.

My uncle is a gambler, he is penny pincher when it comes with everything else, but when it comes to gambling, he treats money like paper.

These people need to read up on the law of large numbers. The more bets you place the more and more likely it is that the casino will be the winner.

When we lived in North FL,we would go to Biloxi once a year in Feb.,Palace Casino Resorts, the room was $49 and smoke free,if someone were to smoke there was a $200 fine.
We generally went for 3 days and never lost much, enjoyed watching other people gamble,to me and wife it was a donation,we played the slots,we are seniors and retired.
When we lived in Denver '71-88 we would go to Vegas,United Air lines for $135 round trip each, four nights in Westward Ho along with transportation to and from casino.
those were the good days, lounge shows, cheap good food and nice sitting and people watching along the strip,no thought at all about safety,go casino to casino with our slot money in cups, now history. The down town was nice, one time my wife left her purse between slotmachine and it was returned intact.
We are in Ct near Mohegan Sun and have lost our desire to go,we did use to go once in awhile years ago,we have lived in Ct now for 3 years, not a nice state but age and family have dictated this.
Life now not very pleasant.

One time a long time ago I went out to a casino with a couple of bozos I used to go around with, one of whom was my step brother. By 3am he'd emptied out his checking account at the ATM. He's an idiot though and has all the stories to prove it.

I've never won more than $40 at a slot machine in Vegas or anywhere else, so perhaps I just don't see the appeal.

I go to the casino for the buffet and the watered-down drinks. Maybe if I’m feeling lucky, I’ll play $20 on the nickel slots.

I knew of someone who was a gambler. Spent every weekend in the casino. She told me her system which I couldn’t even comprehend. Also told me she met another lady there who blew all her money, so she couldn’t buy gas for her car to drive home. She had been there all night trying to get money to get home. I kind of wonder if she was talking about herself but I don’t know.

Another poster mentioned the seniors in the casino blowing their retirement. She said the same thing. They would wear Depends undergarments to keep from having to go to the bathroom or risk losing the machine to someone else. Sad.
