I like anime because it's drawn beautifully. And I like the way they dress. I like high socks, too. But if the storyline is too stupid or rude, I can't watch it.
You may admire the artistic drawing and say that if it’s rude you can’t watch it, but I think that to some you could be skating on very thin ice there.
I don't like the oversized heads and huge eyes in most anime--they seem to be intended to spark maternal feelings, but I don't have those.
I also don't get the appeal of most licensed characters. For instance, i would never buy clothing with Mickey Mouse on it.
I'm also not into fandom, loving all things Star Trek or Harry Potter. I can enjoy the book or show or movie (including good quality animation), but wearing a Hufflepuff scarf seems childish to me (though somewhat more mature than wearing Slitherin colors).
These all seem related to me, maybe not to you.
I'm not much of a joiner, maybe that's why I don't understand other people wanting to demonstrate their love of a character or show.
BTW, I think there's an entertainment forum for movies and TV. Maybe that's where this thread should have gone.

If there're severed legs or arms and too much gore, I'm disgusted to watch it. I cover my eyes with my hands or turn away. I turn off anime like that.

Proud Disney adult here. I know there are many people who don't "get" my love for Disney. That's okay. They don't need to. Doesn't affect my enjoyment one iota. Yes, I know they're judging me and looking down on me for visiting the parks 2-3 times a year. Luckily, I don't need their approval. And I don't think any less of them for not liking Disney. Everyone has something that I don't get the appeal of (Star Trek, wrestling, horror films, sports, etc.), but if it's meaningful to them and brings some joy to their life, that's great.
What I really don't "get" is judging people for the things that make them happy.
My daughter begged me to watch anime with her. When I didn't enjoy a particular episode and decided I couldn't watch further, I explained to her why. Then she picked another series she thought was a better fit for me. She was right; I fell in love with it. If somebody were to ask me what type of music I like, I couldn't answer because I like songs across all genres. The same is true of films.
My daughters introduced me to Fruits Basket and Death Note years ago and I loved both of them! And of course, Pokemon!
Many adults like it. I’m not getting the appeal.
For starters there is a WIDE range of anime. HUGE.
A lot of it I don't like, some of it I like quite a lot.
What you did was the equivalent of watching 1 episode of a sitcom that you didn't like (say 2 and 1/2 men which I thought was dumb) and as a result are writing off Cheers, Seinfeld, Big Bang Theory etc. because you don't like "sitcoms".
Great opportunity to find something that BOTH of you can enjoy and bond over.
If you want to watch a masterpiece of Anime, rent Spirited Away. It's sorta like Alice in Wonderland and has a lot of subtle plot stuff going on. It's on the IMDB top 100 movies of all time list. Yeah, that's right top 100 of ALL types of movies.

I don't think Studio Ghibli is considered anime except under the broadest of umbrellas. Miyazaki himself didn't want to lump his work under that definition.
