It is sexy grade school girls martial arts fighter cartoons. Grade school warriors stuff. Sailor Moon is the only one I can name but that is an example of anime..
That's a pretty narrow assessment of a very broad genre. But if it's not for you that's cool. I feel the same way about anything Sci fi and most live action fantasy.
They always want to watch it bc theyre obsessed with it. Lol
Just think its a weird thing to be obsessed with @ 40 yrs old but what do I know
The issue isn't anime. The issue is obsession. People can be obsessed with anything, and it becomes a problem when it becomes excessive and causes disregard for others.
Anime is a style, usually film version of Japanese graphic novel. Ranges from the very mild like "My Neighbor Totoro" to some really dumb and very violent stuff. My interest started with the Hayao Miyazaki movies. Very child friendly movies like Totoro.
Recently watched and have to put in a word for Eden of the East, hey kidnapped army of 20000 naked nerds cant be all bad. Dont worry, no actual inconvenient body parts shown. Or maybe censored for delicate American sensibilities with bright star covering any inconvenient bits.
I was impressed enough with two English dubbed versions off Netflix of Conan the Detective, actually got whole set of Conan the Detective movies. Though not the ones dubbed in English, these were lot cheaper. Get choice of Chinese or Japanese with English subtitles. There are some of them available dubbed in English and lot easier to watch. But the character Conan as a pint size Sherlock Holmes type detective is well thought out. Like lot series, earlier ones better than later ones.
Hey for the older folk out there, some may remember the Astro Boy black and white anime from 1960s. Probably first anime shown in USA. Netflix has whole series on dvd. I was surprised as some were thought lost. Back then lot tv shows were destroyed once shown. Nobody thought anybody would want to watch them again. They were basically filler between sponsor's commercials.
Oh and one of my favorites XXXHolic (no XXX scenes, not sure where the name comes from) but its definitely different. Basically a boy in late teens bothered by spirits only he can see, starts working for a dimensional witch that sells wishes. He works for her in order to pay for his wish to be left alone by the spirits. Actually he gets sort of pushed into by the witch who sees something in him and wants him as an apprentice. Basically each episode is a morality tale only told with use of supernatural entities involved. But in effect its him growing up and maturing.
Or how about an anime series with an "economics" theme. Try Spice and Wolf. Its different and actually kinda interesting. So no, anime is not all battling robots and super heros and buxom girls with machine guns. Plenty of that if thats what you want though.
Many adults like it. I’m not getting the appeal.
Yeah I don't get it either, never have. My grown son and his cousins all like it, watch entire series/shows. It all started with Pokemon/Pikachu for us I think. Like others, to me it's simply a cartoon. I haven't watched cartoons (other than with my son when he was little) since I was a kid. I've never understood the appeal for adults.
I think it's weird that someone would come into your home and want to watch anime. I can't even envision how this could come about. When you have people in your home, they should be doing whatever it was you invited them over for.
I wouldn't be judging friends for their choice in entertainment, everyone is different. But I would be judging their inappropriate behavior of doing it while they are visiting at someone else's house.
Well its usually come over for a movie but anime is almost always brought up lol
Im not judging really, im genuinely just curious what the appeal is
Sure but should ppl in their 40’s like anime? in my opinion … it’s for kids

But i mean whatever, i was just wondering what the appeal is for a 40 something
Anime started becoming popular/going more mainstream here in the US around the mid to late nineties. My daughter is in her mid thirties and she started watching anime with her friends around sixth grade or so, so I don't find it at all surprising that people in their forties are interested, they've grown up with it. And anime does cover a lot of territory. Some of it's for kids and some of it has some pretty complex plots, and/ or mature themes that I definitely wouldn't want a kid watching. Anime does not automatically equal cartoons any more than video games are just for kids. Some of the story lines are interesting and the artwork can be quite pretty and/or intricate.
(I mean if you have group of forty years olds watching Sailor Moon for any reason other than nostalgia I might sort of wonder about THAT, but I doubt very much that's the kind of thing happening.)
Many adults like it. I’m not getting the appeal.
Well, there you go.
