Fort Myers certainly always looks to have a high crime rate as opposed to other parts of SW Florida. There's no way that the crime is higher than Chicago. That's ludicrous.

I live in Naples and have lived in Ft Myers before.. There are obviously good parts and bad.. Pine Manor is one of them. Stay FAR FAR AWAY from there. I have personally seen someone shot there. Most of the major crimes in SW Florida are in Ft. Myers and Lehigh. Most of the drug busts are in Golden Gate Estates in the Naples area. However, I don't think that Ft. Myers could ever be as bad as a large city like Chicago, but it is bad.

I lived in the Fort Myers Cape Coral area for 24yrs before moving away 6 yr ago. The news reports regarding crimes are not bogus. The crime rate in Fort Myers and Cape Coral is INSANE! I wouldn't be caught dead walking down the street in Central Fort Myers...nor in East Fort Myers on Palm Beach BLVD. Full of druggies and hookers. I wouldn't be going to the Edison Mall alone at night either..it's not safe. The amount of killings and rapes and drug cases are skyrocketing..but no one wants to do anything about it..they all want to remain PC when the truth is..the crime is coming over from the east coast and has been for yrs and has finally reached a point of being out of control. Read the News Press online and see for yourself.

All of the areas you mentioned are bad. I agree, the crime has sky-rocketed. I wouldn't live in town for anything. I lived there 10 years ago and it was bad then.

The original poster mentioned that it compares to Chicago and I just don't see that comparison. Maybe it's based on population vs. crime?

It's a real shame that it's so crime-ridden now b/c it's a beautiful city.

There is good and bad neighborhoods everywhere. If you drive down McGregor Blvd. in Ft. Myers you will see a very nice area!

Just because they are from NY doesn't mean they brought the crime with them. There are other transplants in Florida from other crime state..remember there are 50 of them!

New York has alot of crime because look at the size of the population. You can't compare a city like NY to a city like Ft. Myers. Ft. Myers and Cape Coral are constantly on the news for some crime related issues.
