You have to be real careful with the up-selling at Subway.

If you have a Safeway supermarket near you, their deli usually features a weekly special and you can put together a MEAN sandwich....not as healthy as Subway's, but damn good.

Eating at home is soooo much cheaper. Get good bread, meat, cheese from the deli and bags of chips and free water!

Yup!

We eat at home 97% of the time. The other 3% is when we are out at family's house, or if we go out on a date (when we get the time, money and sitter that is!), but even on date night, we still eat cheap, and not Subway.

Subway's food has gotten more expensive and less food over the past few years, and not worth it.

Fully agree.

Eat at home and save money.

Take home-prepared food with you when you go out. Get a portable nylon cooler with a freezer pack.

Wait for sales at your supermarket, and read your weekly supermarket sale ads.

There is a supermarket near me that puts nearly the exact same foods on sale one week each month, so I just wait for the particular sale week to buy certain foods, such as boneless/skinless chicken breast for $1.39/lb, and tomatoes for .33/lb. Then I stock up for entire month, and have enough until the following month's sale.

Regarding extra cheese ... do yourself a favor, and eat less cheese. It's loaded with fat.

See this: Don't Say Cheese: Cheese Is Number-One Source of Artery-Clogging Fat in American Diet

If you do need extra food on a Subway sandwich, add more veggies. Double up on the spinach leaves, cucumbers, and bell peppers.

We eat there from time to time (when there aren't any other good options) alway get a 12" and split it (cheaper than two 6 ' 's)

I got extra cheese about a month ago (to give to my toddler daughter) and I think they charged me 80 cents or so...

The Vons by our house makes some good sandwiches, better than subway, cheaper (plus the 6th is free) and they frequently have promotions (choice of crackers/chips or free drink). We swing by there and get some made up if we're going out hiking or to the park for the day (one of their 12'', a couple pieces of fruit and our (from home) bottle of water make a perfect lunch fo rmyself, Husband and toddler)

The first and last time we were at Subways the woman was making my husband's sandwich and put 5 of those paper thin slivers of green bell pepper on his sandwich. Then, she took two of them off and put them back.
I asked if I could get extra tomato sauce on my meatball sandwich and she started to put ketchup on it. I screamed at her.
Oh, and before I ordered coffee I asked if they had half and half for it.
She said yes.
Then she gives me coffee with artificial creamer.
It took about nine of those super tiny creamers to get my coffee to the desired lightness, sort of the color you get at Dunkin Donuts.

We never went back.
Ignorant stingy jerks, really!

Hopefully that Subway in Oregon will go out of biz soon, that's just ridiculous. I do like the one by me, though, nice people working there, and when I ordered a sub with extra cheese (50 cents on the menu), they didn't charge me for it

The thing that ticks me off the most about companies raising prices is that they're doing it without giving raises to employees to cover those higher prices. If businesses are allowed to raise prices at will, then I think they should be *required* to give the same level increase to their employees - fair is fair, right?
