Which one would you rather receive (tax free)? Assume the family vacation includes transportation, lodging, typical vacation type expenses (such as Disneyland tickets, tours, boat rides, jet ski rentals, lift tickets, whatever), and food.

[If the numbers are too low (you have a huge family), just in general, vacation cost or half in cash (like $4000 vacation vs $2000 cash)]

The vacation for sure. Money is virtually unlimited. Family vacation time is not.

Is this another "frugality" thread that's really just about being plain old poor?

I would take the vacation because I have not been on a vacation in about 8 years.

Vacation with family... time is more precious than money.

Money. We have already went on several smaller vacations this year. Our next is a trip to Chicago. The money would help more than another vacation.

Hubby and I aren't big fans of traveling, and usually only go on week long vacations every 4 or 5 years, besides which, we like to plan our own trips, not go on trips someone else devised, so I'd take the cash hands down every time.

It depends entirely upon what the vacation package is for.

I don't want to go to Disney anything, but would jump on a river cruise in Europe.

Since taxes are due on both prizes, best to not take the vacation unless you can kick the cash loose to pay the taxes on it.

Assume whatever vacation you want; the comparison is the vacation or half the price in cost.

Also, I did write tax free in the original post.

I would take the money and go on a 30 day motorcycle vacation by myself. Best of both worlds.
