I love celery & find it adds a lot of flavor, for little money.
And some crunch. I need that.
I love all the different answers. While I think it would be depressing to eat like this regularly, seems it's not as hard as I thought. The pantry helps and I think only feeding yourself, too. My grandma always said that it's easier to be poor alone bc sometimes the other person complains and makes it harder. Lol
For an alternative week of $10, I might buy tortillas, refried beans & some salsa & cheese $4 ( all at dollar tree) & that would probably make about 3 or 4 meals. Eggs are always a good inexpensive protein choice, so I would make eggs for dinner, an omlette or scrambled eggs. That is another $1 ( 2 or 3 meals with eggs left over) With the last $5 I'd probably buy some pasta & a can of sauce & more cheap cheese.
This thread is a good reminder on buying a few tins for emergencies, I always keep cans of chili, tuna, beans, & ham on hand. We used to live in earthquake country so got used to having some cans of food on hand, & I still do it. I use them before they expire & try to remember to replace them.
We have lots of bargains here! And I could make bread easily. And I already have condiments like butter and jelly so that helps!
2lbs dry beans $1
2lbs pasta $1
2lbs brown rice $1
1lb ground beef(in the markdown section) $2
1/2lb cheese $2
1 onion, 1 bell pepper, 1 bunch of cilantro $1
1 big can of jalapeno salsa $1
I have $1 left over and I would either buy some fruit or some day old sweet baked goods so I wouldn't feel too deprived. I would brown the ground beef, soak and wash the beans, and then throw everything(not the pasta) in the crockpot with lots of spices. While that's cooking I would make some bread. Done! When I got tired of eating beans and rice, I would make pasta with butter and cheese.
Sometimes we play this game while we use up what's in the freezer and pantry. I've done it before for real ($40/week to feed a family of four) and it was not fun at all, but it's not bad when you're doing it by choice.
I would cook the beans with onion, bell pepper, tomato and cilantro and have beans for dinner three of the nights. I have supplies to make tortillas or cornbread in my pantry, and both go well with beans. I would have pancakes one night and waffles another night. (already have flour, baking powder, powdered milk, etc. in my pantry) An omelet for dinner another night and lentil soup the last night, with a few of the remaining tomatoes and onion. Breakfast every day would be oatmeal. Lunch would be leftovers.
