Those prices you shared would never be that low where I live.
Cheapest I'd buy for the week:
1/2 gal milk $2
1 doz egg $2.50
1 bag of brown rice $1.69
1 bag of Black Beans $1
A bunch of Bananas $1.50
Oats in bulk enough for breakfast $2
couple cans of tuna $2
a head of red leaf lettuce $2
1 bag carrots (whole) $1.50
I'd make homemade GF bread for...tuna sandwich and fried egg sandwich
also have:
tuna salad over lettuce
carrots
rice, beans
oats/fresh banana for breakfast
I'd also need some hot tea/coffee each day.
I hope you don't have to spend $10 for long, that is a tough budget.
I am not a chili snob, so we do eat it. It is not as good as home made, but it is a convenience & cheap food to keep on hand.
One can for the two of us is a lunch, at a buck a can. Or over rice it can be a dinner. This thread is about cheap meal ideas, not gourmet cooking.
Our CostCo sells a box of an Indian lentil stew-type thing that tastes just like chili, only better. And it's vegetarian. You can buy the individual packets of it at other stores, but they're expensive. If you get it at CostCo, it's quite reasonable at something like $8 for six packets. One packet will serve two people, if served over rice or pasta. And no weird ingredients or fillers.
The packaging is yellow, but I don't recall the brand.
I would make chicken & dumplings the first night. The second night add orzos or pastina for a chicken soup. Use leftover chicken for chicken salad assuming I had mayo & leftover celery from the soup for a lunch or two. Escarole & cannellini one night. So I have 4, maybe 5 nights of food, maybe a few lunches and nothing for breakfast. :-(
I would never been able to make it for a week on $10 unless I already had coffee, cream, butter & olive oil in the pantry.
This is exactly why so many poor people have weight issues. It's hard to eat healthy when you don't have a lot of money to buy fruits, vegetables & meat.
Many poor people have weight issues because they buy soda, frozen pizzas and snack cakes, which are not inexpensive. I have noticed that the stores put out the cold roasted chickens, sandwiches, etc in bulk since while a hot roasted chicken can't be purchased with food stamps - these items have red stickers saying they qualify for food stamp purchases. Compare that to buying a whole chicken and cutting/cooking yourself.
Meat is also not a necessity.
Dry beans and cook it yourself rice, the old standby.

Hmmm, EXACTLY what I was thinking....lets up the anti to ADD to the thread, and see WHAT one is going to DO with the items bought for a week's $10.00 worth of stuff for meals ALSO! LEt's see some basic recipes too! {no need to get descriptive with exact recipe unless you want to!}
Let's assume you have one or two people to cook for and you have your $10 budget. Now, WHAT are you going to cook with those $10 items for the week?
No fair adding "ramen noodles for lunch"!! lol
I'll look tomorrow at the sales paper, but I will give you an example: a $3.50 chicken, gives me at least 3 meals, plus a lunch, with some added purchases as described:
I bought: 1 chicken fryer: $3.50, 2 @ .59c cans of broth, one $1 bag of carrots, one $.99 bag of noodles {$6.67 so far}, one bag $1.99 potatoes {$8.66 with left over funds for "other" for other meals I don't know yet}
1} roast that bird! Provides 2 leg/thigh for dinner 2 with a part of a bag of $1.00 carrots for veggie, and left over bread "heals" used to make stuffing. COst $3.75.
2}USe one side of the breast meat to make chicken salad for lunch, with some celery {assumed bought @ $1.99 last week and and on hand}, and 1 onion already on hand and mayo/mustard {since condiments are already in existence, the mayo/must included} Cost: $0.00 this week. {still have one breast side left}
3} remove all remaining breast meat and chicken, and make a broth with the boiled bones {wing tips, bones, neck meat}, but I add 2 $0.59 cans of chicken broth to make a soup with carrots, celery, onions and potatoes {if desired} with some rosemary, thyme, parsley, garlic and onion powder and a handful of a bag of noodles, {out of a $0.99 cent bag, about a $0.25 worth} . Cost $1.53
4} I've always had a LOT of chicken for the soup and have soup left over, so I thicken it with corn starch {or flour} and, voila! chicken STEW. Cost $0.00 {corn starch OR flour on hand}
ALL that with one chicken, of course it doesn't have to all be eaten in one week, one could freeze the deboned chicken and bones for soup/stew next week.
Yay! At least 3 meals for 2 and a lunch OR 4th dinner of chix salad sammies.
One could save the other breast meat half for later, or use it in the soup. OR have the breast meat {both sides} or the rest of the breast meat as something for a main protein part of another entree, as yet undetermined}
YUM!
Next time maybe I'l think of BEEF as the main course......
10 bucks barely gets me a lunch . i live on peanut butter and eggs for breakfast and even then i doubt i could do it for just one meal all week .
we typically spend 15 -20x that in a week .
