If i don't go to the grocery store with a limit in cash...say $30/week ( i go usually once a week), then i WILL overspend. Ill buy more junk food too.
So YES i use CASH only at the grocery store.
Now gas is cc only. Why? Because we have a loyalty card that gives $0.03 off, plus you get $0.05 off fof usibg house brand gas cc, for a total of $0.08 off per gallon. Ill be darned if ill pay more for using cash on gas. I dont like it, but its the way it works.
We use both. It doesn't matter. Sometimes the bill is more cash than we have on us. I don't know how anyone can use a credit card and not know the money's gonna come from the same place. Yeah, sometimes there's a few points earned. There has been a 5% bonus category for groceries that didn't apply to the supermarket where we shop.
We stock up on bargains on things we use. The cost at checkout is not a factor. How much room is in our freezer might be.
I use a credit card because of the 2% cash back for groceries. We have a running list of things we want to buy that I stick to closely. The only time I deviate from the list is when something we use regularly is on sale but it wasn't in the sale flyer. I go up and down every aisle to see if the items we use regularly are on sale and if the sale is a good one, I'll buy enough for up to 3 months. I'm not tempted by typical impulse buys, which to me are things we don't normally eat or shouldn't eat like cake.
I write a check. Very few impulse buys due to always having a written list. Mrs. NBP, however, is the Queen of Impulse when she goes grocery shopping. One reason why I've done them for the 40 years we've been together.
I did get a couple impulse things yesterday, a roast on sale and a bucket of chocolate chip cookies on sale (in store bakery), but I'd had both on my mental list if there was a sale.

Yes, I have treated grocery shopping as a place I could get most anything and not feel guilty as it's for "survival"......
We used to use cash only for groceries and gas. But it reached the point where I didn't feel comfortable carrying that much cash around. It really doesn't stop impulse buys and doesn't matter much in the budget. At least for me since an impulse buy might be a box of cookers for a couple of bucks. And that isn't going to break the bank either way. That impulse buys that will really mess you up are clothes, shoes, and such because you can drop a couple hundred pretty quick on clothes.
Card obviously, I’m frugal and don’t like wasting money. Cash is a terrible way to pay for anything except maybe strippers. I get 2% cash back on groceries and that’s A LOT over a year!
CC for cash back. Doesn't matter if it's 99 cents.
