I always tip an employee, but not if it is the owner working the register.
Although, I'm generally pretty frugal, I have tipped (a young worker) $10 for a $10 meal I ordered to go.
I sometimes feel 'fatherly' about young people.

Regardless of who is taking the payment, or the cost of the food, we have been tipping $10 whenever we pick up food to go. Last night, for example, it was Mexican, at about $55 for 3 meals. With no waiter/waitress to tip, we just want to help them get through so that they are still around after the pandemic for us to go back to eating there.

Yes. They are probably working that job because they have no choice and taking on a huge chunk of the exposure risk. If you can’t afford to tip in this environment, don’t order out.

Yes. 15% before lockdown, 15% now.

My state has the highest minimum wage in the nation for tipped employees, and even that is only $13.50. Most food service shifts are less than 8 hours, and many workers work fewer than 5 days a week. Then they have to pay for their own health insurance. Nobodyis getting wealthy on that.

If I choose to order takeout, which is completely avoidable, the least I can do is throw a few bucks to the waitstaff.

tippers do you dip the drive thru window at mickey D's or the doughnut store or starbucks?

i never tip on any take out food - they are getting paid to package and give you your food- tipping is out of control with tip jars next to every register - i can afford to tip but its just bugs the hell out of me to tip someone to pour a cup of coffee and give me change!

I tip for takeout most of the time, and more under these current conditions.

I do NOT tip at chains/fast casual take-out places where take-out is kind of their bread-and-butter already.

But the local sushi place? The local Lebanese place?

They've doubled down on supplies and other modifications to pivot their businesses that I feel obligated (in a good way) to support them with an extra tip.

I am a tipper but I don't buy food at any of the types of places you mentioned in the first place. But I am curious--how would you tip someone at a drive-through window? Just tell them to keep change? Hand them extra cash? Tell them to put it on a card? Just wondering about the mechanics of this. (Seriously, it has been years since I went through a drive-through!)

I did the same with a local diner where friends and I used to go at least once a month. They are doing takeout. I have been there twice to pick up food and added a tip.

if you add money to the CC bill at the register for takeout, how is that money distributed?
