I didn’t pick the cashier before I picked up food pre-Covid, but now feel somewhat “pressured” to do so, about $2 for one person for a $17 meal. One of the benefits of takeout food is not having to tip, IMO. It’s somewhat of a turnoff in going to this place that I really like. Do you tip in this situation?

I always tip on takeout as well! (not as much as a much as eating in) - someone still gets your food together for you, using their containers, etc. If you can afford to pick up a meal from a restaurant, the least you can do is tip them well!!!

I hear you, I’ve never tipped for takeout and never expected it during my short stint in the service industry many moons ago. Putting your food in containers is a small cost of running a restaurant. Now if I sit down for a meal and enjoy the atmosphere and food and service, of course one should tip well based on experience.

Yes.

I don't normally tip for take-out. But these kids - and they are mostly kids - are taking a risk, and I am VERY grateful that they are.

A cashier??? Why??
I don't think that cashiers work for tips...
Do you tip cashiers at a grocery store? Like cashiers at HEB?

I do. 10 percent of the order.

The last time I did take out from a restaurant ... pre-covid... I asked the person giving me the food if their pay rate was different than servers due to the fact that they were doing the take out part of the restaurant. I was told she was paid the same rate as a server. In Texas the min wage is 2.13 an hour.
