I open my wallet a little more freely when giving gifts, within reason. But I still set a gift budget and stick to it.

The two gift items I'm frugal about are greeting cards and gift wrap. I'd rather not spend more than $3 for a greeting card, because they're usually read once and soon after thrown away. I'll make an exception if it's a highly artistic card (as in worthy to be framed), a quality pop-up card that I think the person would want to keep, or a unique card from a special place. Gift wrap too just gets thrown away, so I wouldn't spend more than $5 for a standard roll.

I don’t exchange gifts with very many people anymore as we all are at the stage of life where we don’t need anything. The few people I buy for I tailor my gifts to what they would like. I shop year round at sales.

Presents are a thing of the past in my family, just a kids' thing. No wasted time, no stuff you don't really need, no wasted money.

I enjoy giving gifts and we do so year round. Sometimes something small. Sometimes something over the top.

That’s a great idea. I’d like to give my son a car detailing for a gift. They have 2 young children and they sure need it. The problem is, they’re in and out of the car all day, so it would be hard.

^ Look, just give them the gift certificate for the detailing place and let them figure out when they can take the car.

They're adults they can figure it out. -- Or not.

(Find out how long that certificate price is good for. If they never go then THEY have wasted your money. Not you.)

Even if they rent a car for a day while their car is getting detailed, that's cheaper than the detail. They're still getting a good gift of a deal.

People figure out a way to do what they want to do.

My family decided decades ago to stop with the gift giving, too many of us. My friends have never exchanged gifts which is great. We go out for a meal for birthdays.
