Here is two frugal car purchases. I bought a 1993 Mercury Cougar for $2,500 in 2001. A taxi cab rear ends me, but the damage was minor. I was surprised the insurance gave me $3,500 to repair it. I ended up just taking the money and selling it for $1,800 so I made out really well. My second would be my 1995 Ford Contour that I bought for $2,400 around 2002. I got rear ended by some drunk teenage girl The damage was minor, but the insurance company gave me $1,700 to repair it which I kept. I was then side swiped by a tow truck later on, and was given $3,000 to fix it. The car still ran and drove fine, but was severely damaged cosmetically. I decided to sell it, and got another $800. I am one of the few people who enjoys getting into car accidents (as long as I am not injured) as I always seem to make out well. Currently, I am in need of a new car. Anyone want to hit me??
Husband bought me a nice 2001 silver Buick Century Limited for $2000 at the car auction.
Small items, silver round soup spoons from the 1940's that I use nearly every day, garage sale 6 for $8.
Let's see. Mine involved some work, but what good frugal purchase doesn't?
We were looking for good bunk beds on Craigslist. My wife liked the solid wood This End Up brand. If you know them, you know that these bunk beds are indestructable, made of 4" pine posts, 1.5" pine boards, and held together with 8" iron bolts. Needless to say, they weigh a ton. So, we find a listing offering two sets of This End Up bunks beds with trundle, ladder, mattresses, and bunky boards for $500. We check it out. The mattresses are still wrapped in their original plastic and very firm. The wood is in great shape. The owner is moving to California, her boys are almost to college, and she has to downsize a lot. We buy both sets. Then as we are moving the sets, she offers to throw in her nearly new livingroom sofa and loveseat for free (she had another set in the den), which is great because we needed to replace the very old sofabed that I had bought some years earlier in college. We then turn around and sell the second set of bunk beds on Craigslist for $300.
So, in sum, we got solid wood bunk beds that will last at least the next 30-40 years, nearly new mattresses, a trundle bed with mattress, ladder, and nearly new matching sofa and loveseat for $200 net.
I paid $660 for a pair of prescription eyeglasses in 2006, from a local optometrist/optician. Three years later, this pair of glasses was falling apart and I needed new glasses. I'd heard about online eyeglasses, but I was skeptical. I decided to give it a try anyway, and I got a perfectly nice pair of glasses from Zennioptical.com for about $100, including shipping.
My buddy works at Best Buy, so I called him when I needed some HDMI wires for my TV, because their employee discount on some items are insane! The 8 foot HDMI wire that was $79.99 I paid $5.59!!! Thats insane!!! Biggest deal I have ever got.
So my "cheap" purchase is rather silly compared to some of what you guys are sharing... but today I got NINE oranges (which, happen to be probably the best I've had in my life) for a whopping $2.61.
If we're being frugal, does "nothing" count? Because I buy that a lot!
I stayed home tonight and played an old video game and ate homemade chicken soup.
I ended up with a huge pot of soup (at least 4-5 big cans worth) that wasn't laden with chemicals and salt and I paid less than 9 bucks to make a big fat batch.

A few years ago I was in Goodwill and found a new-in-box moonbounce for $25! It was a Target return (our Goodwill buys Target's leftovers). The box was dented but never used. Original price was about $200-$250. We have used that moonbounce for numerous birthday parties, playdates, and holiday weekends. When we're done, we'll probably sell it on Craigslist for $25!
