Hi all, another Northerner (just outside Syracuse, NY) looking to move south and SC seems to be where we'd like to land. We've put a lot of time (and visits) into the Bluffton area and really do like the area and the 55+ communities (specifically Sun City) but am having a bit of a hard time finding a place so we've opened up our search a little bit and are considering communities on lakes (as opposed to being close to the coast). One of the places we're looking at is Savannah Lakes Village and I thought I would hit up the forum for some thoughts on the community, the area, etc. We like the thought of being by Lake Thurmond and we're not true "big city" people but I'm concerned about the remote reputation of McCormick. I'm hearing it's :30 - :45 minutes away from a city with the typical big box stores (Walmart, Home Depot, supermarkets, etc.) and I'm wondering just how remote it is. What about healthcare (i.e. hospitals, Dr's offices, dentists, etc.), restaurants or activities? We're a healthy, active couple and, while I can appreciate some love the slow, quiet life, I'm wondering if it would be a bigger culture shock than I'm anticipating? All thoughts, questions and comments are appreciated! Thanks, everyone!
(Edit: Not sure if I should have this in the SC/Columbia section or the SC/Greenville section so I'll put it there as well.)
One hour to Augusta GA but 30 minutes to Greenwood SC in the upstate. You could look it up but I believe Self Regional Health system in Greenwood has family healthcare there and Greenwood would most likely have the closest big box shopping but not as much variety as Augusta.
Well, I’ll admit that as a golfer, being an hour away from Augusta is no issue with me but I’m not quite moving there for that reason (lol). Thank you both for the notes. At this point in our research, all input is very much appreciated!

There's no Walmart in McCormick or Lincolnton across the lake which is a little bigger. Greenwood is the closest town with Walmart, Lowes, etc. I think it's pushing 45 minutes from Savannah Lakes to Greenwood on mostly 2 lanes roads. McCormick is the least populated county in SC or close to it.
It may be a good idea to try Greenwood, Hartsville , Chapin and other small lake towns from a convenience stand point. Greenwood is located in between several large lakes and a smaller one a few miles to the east.
McCormick doesn't really fit anywhere. And.. 100%, it's pretty far from anything. Usually, it's lumped in with the "Lakelands" region with Greenwood and Abbeville and Calhoun Falls.
I believe there is a hospital in McCormick, but like Abbeville.. If you have something serious, you're going to Greenwood. that's the biggest town nearby.. pending on what all is in Lincolnton, GA. Greenwood is where you'll have your Home Depot, Best Buy, etc, etc.
Restaurants.. A handful of local places.. Plus Subway, Burger King and a Hardees.
If you're looking Rural, but still DECENTLY close to 'civilization'.. Abbeville might be a better place to put eyes on. You'll be surrounded by Mennonites, but.. You'll have good cabinets! It's only about 15 miles from Greenwood. Has a ton of history Birth and Death place of the Confederacy, Secession Hill.. They do a spring festival downtown on the square every year.. Hogs and Hens in the fall, which.. Is just another festival on the square with BBQ.. And then there's Swartzentrubers. Oh, Swartzentrubers. Mennonite bakery.
Due West is a small college town in Abbeville. Hodges is just outside Greenwood..

Hartsville is closer to the coast than Greenwood.

Unfortunately No Home Depot or Best Buy in Greenwood.
2 Walmart's, Lowes Home Improvement, Kohl's, Belk Dept Store, TJMaxx, Ross, Big Lots, Ollie's, Hobby Lobby, Big Lot's, Publix Supermarket are the larger stores there on Hwy 72 in Greenwood. Some national restaurants like Chili's Outback, Red Lobster, O'Charleys, and Cracker Barrel.
