Heres my opinion to the OP. First stop leaving food outside. If that doesn't work do what you need to do. I'v had to dispatch numerous raccoons over the years and used mostly a 22 or crossbow. I'd be more concerened with a humane death than pelt condition. If you are concerened with the pelt get a trapping permit, most all states have them, and trap them legally.
Racoons are in no danger of dissapearing if you shoot a couple like some folks here seem to think.
The woman with one on her lap is probably hurting the species more than killing one will, they are not pets, they are wild animals & like many wild animals their populations are higher now than they would be in nature lacking people. Theyre very common around suburbia & in cities, not nearly so much in the woods & forest or in rural settings.
I leave food outside for a couple of personable neighborhood cats, but I bring in whatever they don't eat. It's dry food, so it keeps for the next time.
You must not have ever been up to your @zz in rabbits, raccoons, or deer . . .
No, I'm not (and neither are you). I live in south Florida where we are up to our "@zz" with all sorts of people. So using your approach I should shoot them. Brilliant.
