Yea. But Hampton Roads still sucks :-)

I just got a book called Who's your city. Waiting on the other book from the same author about the rise of the creative class.

Real estate being overpriced is probably #1 on my list. Jobs being trivial and lame is #2. The lack of creative people and those that drive the country forward is #3. I think quite a bit of it has to do with young people mainly being paid low salaries, and the idea this is the way it should be.

There is no easy way to fix it.

Obviously real estate will probably fix itself. Sure young Navy people come tot he area and overpay for crap shacks, but the other two items are the bigger issue. Housing will continue to correct (more losses for those that buy).

I spent 16 years living in VB. Many of those years were unhappy ones. And quite honestly I'm glad to be outta there now. During those unhappy years, I often entertainerd the thought that Virginia Beach sucks. Then I became aware that the external world is a reflection of what's inside of me. When I realized that my attitude also sucked, and started changing it, then VB magically became less sucky. I made a decision to look for the goodies and make the most of my time in VB. Very shortly after that, an opportunity presented itself and I was able to move on to what I consider to be greener pastures. As long as I focused on VB sucks, I felt stuck there! Not becasue there was or is anything intrinsically wrong with VB, but rather because of my own attitude. Anyplace is what we make out of it. Admittedly, I wasn't very successful in making VB a great place to be for me, so I moved on to a place that is more to my liking. But it's never just the place. It's always the place and our attitude toward the place.

now that's an intelligent, unbiased response. HR is far from perfect, but to each his own.

I see plenty of jobs in the Virginia Pilot. I don't think you're "unemployed", I think you're "unemployable". Just saw a job for corn pickers down in Pungo. Sounds like a job to me.

Doesnt sound like a job which pays remotely close to Hampton Roads living wage to me.

Working a job that pays less then living wage is absolutely pointless.

There is a point where the gov't handouts go farther and are more beneficial than working for a low wage and accumulating debt. There is a basic cost of living required for shelter, food and all the small taxes and fees from the gov't. I'm not sure that a minimum wage job could afford this, so why work if it won't?
