Good catch on my missing Galveston-Texas City (but it looks like combined D-FW was still bigger in both 1970 and 1960.

Amended my summary to correctly add Galveston/Texas City to the 1960-70 Houston metro populations (I've also changed the 1980 numbers to what I think are more accurate numbers, and which indeed show Houston metro was briefly larger than the Dallas-Fort Worth metro, no doubt a result of the crazy-booming oil market of the 1970s):

Houston Metro Population
1960: 1,558,687 (including 140,364 Galveston/Texas City)
1970: 2,154,843 (including 169,812 Galveston/Texas City)

OK I think we have agreement; the last time Greater Houston was more populous than DFW was the 1980 census. Before 1980 if you combined Dallas and Fort Worth you would have a larger population, however that was not done officially until 1980 so until the 1990 census Greater Houston was the most populous MSA in Texas.

I'm also assuming that in the 1850 census through at least the 1870 census the Houston/Galveston axis was larger than the Dallas/Fort Worth axis lol.

What is true now and has been throughout both metro areas' history is DFW is more attractive for domestic migrants and Houston more for international immigrants. I think if metro Houston had the balance between unzoned city and incorporated/zoned suburbs (or at least unincorporated areas planned well like in Colorado), then Houston would have higher, more consistent domestic migration due to being a more attractive relocation center.

Houston: https://www.recenter.tamu.edu/data/p...gar_Land%2C_TX

DFW: https://www.recenter.tamu.edu/data/p...rlington%2C_TX

sidenote: once the census combines areas, they update prior estimates. you'll see this in the charts linked

Houston with its unzoning provides boroughs and districts with a tentative atmosphere and commutable pass-through. The unzoned areas make the city a more dense and setting region. The vicinity of Houston make the city very approachable and departable. Areas that have undergone numerous projects and redevelopment boost the designation of Houston even more.
