Is anyone planning to travel for the eclipse? Was thinking of going to Austin or DFW area, but the weather looks lousy. How bad would the traffic be? I'll need to be back in Houston by around midnight.

I'm going to Austin. My plan is to be ready to go, and to leave as soon as it's over. Hopefully that will put me on the road before all the folks further west.

I don't know what year it was (not very long ago), but some of my ex-coworkers viewed a total eclipse from Casper, Wyoming. They left quickly, but it took about 8 hours to go 100 miles. It was a traffic nightmare, as central Texas will be. The forecast is for cloudy skies, so we've canceled our trip to Austin. People need to make sure they have a full tank of gas before leaving, as gas stations will have lines around the block, assuming they don't run out of gas.

We are headed to Dallas. My daughter and grandchildren are there, so we can at least see them. As of now, Dallas has got the best chance of having enough open sky to see something. It doesn't look great, but its worth a try. I assume traffic will be bad.... we are thinking we will stay in Dallas 3 or 4 hours after the eclipse to allow traffic to die down a bit before heading down 35 and 6.

Space City Weather has been doing eclipse updates saying for Dallas "Cloud coverage is likely to be in the 60 to 80 percent range" https://spacecityweather.com/

We have family in Austin and Dallas. Was originally leaning towards Austin since it's closer, but now leaning towards Dallas.

Would you recommend 35 and 6, and avoiding 45, at least for the way back?

We have motel reservations in Fort Stockton and plan to drive somewhere clear near the center of totality on Monday morning. The latest weather forecast doesn’t look too promising for anywhere in the area. Fingers crossed, but we may end up cancelling.

Just for fun I checked out flying to Burlington, VT where the weather will be great on Monday. The cheapest tickets are $2100, so yeah, the airlines are eclipse-gouging too.

I hope you ment Fort Worth because Ft Stockton is way out of the path of totality.
