Huntington and most of the lower Ohio and Kanawha valley area get little snow. Huntington averages 13.9 inches a year of snow while Boone averages 33.1 inches, The mountain areas get much more snowfall with Beckley near the southern part of the state averages 51.5 inches. 2 hours to the north at snowshoe ski resort they average 180 inches and Elkins another hour two the north averages 71.9 inches. Canaan Valley and Timberline Ski resort to the east of Elkins 40 minutes the snowfall average is 160 inches.
I never knew this about my hometown. Does Huntington have snow removal equipment? I lived in Chicago for 25 years and moved to SC 18 years ago. SC is not prepared to remove snow which we get trace amounts most years.

Hi DT, I'm fairly new to this forum and according to the message I received I can't send you a private message until 1-1-1970. So short of a time warp I'll just leave it here. I have been interested in retiring in WV since my home state of Utah priced me out of moving back there. I moved to Georgia 7 years ago for work but recently retired a bit early to care for my daughter, due to an accident, is now a paraplegic. I like the higher elevations and cooler weather plus the affordability WV looks to provide. I have looked at Sutton, Bluefield a little. You are obviously well versed on WV so if you have any recommendations I would love to hear them. As mentioned I like higher elevations, want a few acres for a mini farm and a shop, access to health care, rural but not vacant, with enough going on I could make a friend or two. Thank you in advance!

In order to thwart some spammers, some features at City-Data are disabled until you have been here for 3 days and made 10 posts. After that, you can send all the Direct Messages you need. I think the 1970 date is because they didn't enter a date in the restriction, so it defaulted to the beginning date for the server calendar.
As you retire and care for your daughter, you need access to medical care. First class hospital systems exist in Huntington, Charleston, and Morgantown. In these cities, you can get anything done that you will likely need.
Higher elevations are generally to the east. If you find a spot far enough east, the nearest major hospital may be in Virginia.
