Mountain Dweller loves to grill. A couple weeks ago I went to friends house for cook-out and he asked me to stop by Publix and ask the butcher for a thick cut ham steak. I did and when I got to his house he threw it on his "Big Green Egg". It was my first green egg ham and whoa.. I'm sold.

That said, what are the tips for grilling in Huntsville. i.e., where to buy meats, supplies, grilling tips and ideas, and where to get a Big Green Egg without a 2nd mortgage!!

There are a lot of knock-off BGEs now, called Kamado style cookers. I have seen them at Costco, Academy Sports, Lowes and Home Depot for much cheaper than a BGE. There is nothing really special or proprietary about a BGE, but they do work well at retaining heat. I personally use a Weber Smoky Mountain for smoking and a Weber charcoal kettle or gas Genesis for grilling. It really depends on how much you want to spend and how much room you have at home. I like how I can easily transport my Weber Smoky Mountain with me, whereas the BGEs are several hundred pounds and not easy to transport.

For Boston butts (pork shoulder) I always look for the 100% natural ones w/ no added saltwater solution. Star Market and Piggly Wiggly usually have a greater selection than Publix or Kroger. Same goes for ribs...

I've made my own rubs in the past, but there are a ton of choices out there. Your best bet is to just play around with a few and see what you like best.

I have a Big Green Egg, a vintage Oklahoma Joe offset (the 450lb monster), and La Caja China pig roaster. I like Star Market for the meats. As for rubs and sauces, I make my own - I see no reason to overpay for what is mostly salt, garlic powder and paprika.

I am going to Star Market today. You are about the 5th person to recommend their meat and I have never been there. Thanks for all the good info.

Can't say enough good things about Star Market as well. I LOVE their meat section.

I have looked at the Komodo before, very nice, I also like the Red and Black colors vs. Green. But if I don't get a Big Green Egg, I'm kind of wasting my time? haha

I look forward to having a backyard to grill in by next summer, then I get to start smoking my own meats! On a Big Green Egg.

Funny, because Johnson Pools always advertised them, for the longest time I thought they were a pool related chlorinator. lol

I love my Weber Smokey Mountain grill. I'd rather have it than a Big Green Egg.

Ditto on the Star Market for meat.

Ah fair enough! I just grill on a Holland Grill with gas. Easy peasy.

I use my 50 dollar Weber smoke n grill from Wally World. It does a fine job but definitely not the best and definitely not the easiest to get to a good stable temp. But once you learn it, it can smoke with the rest of them
