The biblical account of the Jewish Exodus from Egypt raises a number of questions about it's historical nature. Or put simply, did it actually occur as described in the Bible or is it only a legend?
The first obvious question would be how many Jews were involved in the Exodus?

It is commonly deduced that over a million, possibly 2 million, were in the exodus.
I believe it actually occured and there is acheological evidence in the form of coral reefs and stone tablets found on both sides of the red sea.
And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, besides children.
(this was only the count of the men, not women, children and the elderly)
And then it goes on to say in verse 38:
Quote:
And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, [even] very much cattle
These were non-Jewish people who also went with them. It doesn't indicate how many.
A year later there was a count made in Numbers 1:45 that said the Jewish population of men
Quote:
All the Israelites twenty years old or more who were able to serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families. The total number was 603,550.
This did not include the tribe of Levi, women, children under 20 or the elderly or the non-Jewish people also journeying with them.
So the 2 million in Robin's post is probably very accurate.
For me, nothing in the Bible is only a legend. If God said it, it is true for me exactly the way He said it. Now, we can sometimes read something wrong or words get lost in a translation, but if we follow a trail long enough, we'll always find the truth.
According to Exodus 12:37 :

None. They were Hebrews. Judaism didn't start until after the exodus, when Moses received the Law.

There is no evidence that the exodus occurred. That many people wandering for 40 years in the desert would have left a lot of evidence...None has ever been found by legitimate archeologists. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/03/wo.../03exodus.html

Really? Here are some links to help others decide.

HortinAz is right, the people in the Exodus were not Jews but Hebrews. They are the descendants of Jacob known as the 12 Tribes of Biblical Israel. They are now the people of UK & Commonwealth nations of Canada, Australia, NZ; USA, Western European, Scandinavian nations; and Israel.
They did wander in the wilderness for 40 years because of their disobedience to God's command that they go into Canaan to kill all the nephilim inhabitants and take over the land. A trip that should have lasted 40 days turned into 40 years. Except for the two scouts, all of them died in the desert, only their children born in the desert were able to possess the promised land. It all came to pass as spoken by the Almighty.
The Coronation Stone now sits under the British Throne is the very rock that supplied them with water miraculously in the 40-years of wandering (see pic in the link). Notice the grooves that were cut into the stone by poles inserted into the rings for carrying it around in the desert.
