Hi all, my wife wants to go to Douglas Lake next week to search for quartz. Being that the lake is so huge do you have any suggestions as to where would be a good place to look? Any advice as to what we should take?
Thanks in advance! :-)

I can't offer any advice, but hope you keep us informed on how it goes. Sounds interesting.

One of the things I have been looking for in my retirement location hunting is whether an area has a rock / mineral club. Assuming they're still active, OP might want to contact the Knoxville Gem and Mineral Society. They have a website Knoxville Gem and Mineral Society | To assist in the promotion and education of the earth sciences and I see there is a Google listing for Facebook too.

From what I understand, you should go before they start raising the lake level in the spring, and walk back and forth along the exposed area below the summer shoreline. Apparently, they wash out of the bank someplace, but I don't know where. The Gem and Mineral Society people could maybe give you some GPS coordinates.

Thanks, for the information. We did go in February and looked around the Douglas Dam boat ramp/swimming hole area. We didn't find much, just some very small pieces of quartz points, ~1/32" dia. by 1/8 "long. My wife did talk to a couple of young ladies that had found a 1/2 long piece of quartz. We'll check with The Gem and Mineral Society before we go again.
