Car market for a while was crazier than the RE market!

Buying an EV isn't for everyone. The evangelists way overstate their benefits in my opinion. With our electric rates a high mpg sedan is nearly the same cost per mile and and almost certainly less expensive.

That being said, the charging issue is way overblown. Having no way to charge at either home or work is critical, but I can regain all of my weekly needs with a single charge in a few hours. In fact your average person could with a standard 120v outlet and overnight charging. Any long distance trips I'm taking the gas car just for convenience sake but it is slowly becoming less of a hassle to do.

I violated the 11th Commandment last July: Thou Shalt Not Pay Retail

On the flip side, I got a bit better than the Carmax number on my trade. I bought an OEM 10 year/100k mile/$0 deductible extended warranty from a dealer in Arizona for $1,650. Other than routine maintenance, tires, and brakes, I totally bounded my cost of ownership for a decade.

The 2023 models didn’t go up as much as the headline inflation rate. The numbers if I bought it now would be a bit lower but the manufacturer stopped the Arizona dealer from selling extended warranties out of state.

I paid cash + trade. Other than Tuxmat floor mats, the car is exactly as it rolled off the car carrier.

When I moved my Vermont-registered car to Massachusetts, my insurance went up 1.5x. The appointment-based registry is better than the mayhem I remember from years ago. My dealer registered the new car.

To matrix who posted in the real estate thread that I can get a corolla for $20K. That's great but it would be at the expense of safety. If I ever end up involved in a crash, I def don't want to be in a corolla.

That's the thing. I doubt I'd be able to charge it at home.

When my grandmother moved to independent living and gave up her car after scraping up the front end on a brick wall, she gave me the 2016 Prius with 2000 miles on it. It was summer 2019. Between covid and then hybrid work, I've only put about 30K miles on it in the last 4 years.

I had to bring my car to the dealership for something recently, and because I have VERY low mileage on my car the dealer sent someone out to try to get me to trade it in. They were offering 18K - even with the body damage that I never bothered to fix from when my grandmother owned it. It's a wild used car market! In contrast, when I sold my 2011 Civic with 80K miles on it in 2019, I think I only got 3 or 4K for it.

I'll run this car into the ground. I want my next car to be a RAV4 hybrid, but even 3-4 year old used ones are selling for 40K now! Absolutely wild.

The dealers are calling everyone with those aggressive pitches to get you to trade in your car. They need assess in the seats.

I had my car in for service (something I couldn’t DIY) and have received 3 calls from three different salesmen at the dealership saying they wanted my trade-in and were prepared to make a good offer.

Nobody wants a 150k mile Ford Taurus that badly….not even me.

My buddy bought a ‘20 GT500 new, drove it 2 years and 10k miles, and sold it for $5-10k more than he paid back in early ‘22. Talk about timing it right.

Bought a 22 Rav4 Prime last year for 43.5k. Got 7500 tax credit and 1500 state rebate. Dealer bought it back for 42k last month. They have it listed for sale for 46k. This car no longer qualifies for 7500 tax credit. New ones cost about 44k.
