Lahaina Front Street is said to be gone, hope that's not true. I love Maui, lots of fun times with my kids. I'll probably never get back, but know they hope to. Prayers for them all.
For those wondering - how does this happen when the hurricane is so far south (hundreds of miles).
A hurricane is a strong low pressure area. North of Hawaii - a very strong high pressure system (which is normally beneficial generating trade winds) was parked.
When you have a strong high pressure area - and a strong low pressure area - what lies between is impacted. While we got more rain this past winter than we have in past years - Maui continues to be in drought and that helped fuel the wildfires.
from what I hear on the news, there's not much Maui to get back to.
Large parts of Maui have not been impacted besides air quality issues - it is a large island. Wailea for instance and the high end resorts are fine - all visitors on West Maui are encouraged to leave ASAP
We have stayed in kaanapali and been to Lahaina twice recently. Once this past June and then last August. Really loved it. So sad. One of my favorite photos was of the Banyan Tree which is likely gone.
Some of buildings on Front Street dated to the late 1800s. Hopefully, the rebuilding effort can start soon. So many people lost homes and livelihoods.

Thanks for the reality check. Only been to HI once and didn't make it to Maui.

Yes!
All those Historic buildings! This is so bad. And they can't do much until the winds die down they say!
